So you have a brilliant dwarf who has managed to invent a process by which he can ferment sand.

What's the problem?  :)

Well, I think obviously if it actually happened it's a bug...but I'm tempted to play the vids or it didn't happen card on this one. If you still have the fort, couldn't you copy your save, destroy all your booze, forbid all water sources if need be, and try to recreate it? It just sounds too crazy.

Well still suspect is that he actually drank the sand, or was he sitting there with a hand full of bag wondering how to pick up some booze?

Did the dwarf in question not happen to have a barrel of booze in his inventory already?
Dwarves have a tendency to carry booze barrels miles away from the stockpiles, after, and maybe also while drinking it.

Urist McSandDrinker: Damn, it was a mirage.

But really, your dwarves drink sand now?

Apparently this one does.  I'm going to assume it was some kind of bug, rather than an insane Dwarf.  But you really can't tell the difference.

Huh... ;D
This must be the weirdest DF bug ever, if your story is true.  :o

This is what I thought was happening, that 'Drink' was displayed as his labor and he would go drink some booze after he was gathering the sand.  But as soon as he walked away, 'Drink' was gone, and instead he was storing stuff in stockpiles.  I watched him for a bit, he didn't have a drink for quite a while afterwards.

And I'm sure that he had no booze in his inventory either, unless it was somehow in the pig tail bag, which I think is impossible.

Maybe he wanted to drink, but wasn't thirsty enough, and got distracted by something?

Either way, what's the best way I could try to recreate this?

He might also have a waterskin on him.

Wouldn't he have removed that when he went civilian again? I thought only military dwarves carried them

It is possible he was having a drink of uber secret special rum that he hides in the sand bag......

I think we have established it is a bug. A very dwarvenly bug though, if anyone can make alcohol out of sand, dwarves can.
