A Sumptious Dwarf With WINE
« on: May 03, 2009, 03:42:23 am »

I recently became interested in Dwarf Fortress, but I use Linux, so I resolved to download the windows version and use WINE (For those not in the know, WINE is basically like a Windows Emulator, but not, it runs much smoother than an emulator). It runs fine, the window is the same size as in Windows (I checked on a friends pure Windows computer) and it runs fine... apart from that all the text is jumbled letters and numbers.

I have tweaked the settings on WINE repeatedly, with no difference. Any advice?

Hm, you better try to use the Opengl/SDL port, its new native version, from thishttp://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=28841 thread. Run the DF script in df_linux folder, not a DwarfFort.exe. If you're using KDE 4 and script doesn't seem to do anything press F4 in dolphin, and in appeared terminal type ./df

Okay, Im actually using Ubuntu, im downloading that SDL now, will report what happens  :)

Can't wait to play, Ive heard good things about this, as well as Nethack, and other games like that.

Of course, if this gets to be too much trouble I may just migrate to XP again, the advantages of Linux are not as good for this computer as they could be.

UPDATE: I have downloaded that and installed it, it asked Fullscreen or not, I answered No, and the window opened. I heard the distinctive start up sound and... Nada.

Black screen, Im fiddling to see what I can do to fix it.

Have you got installed and working drivers for your videocard? I mean 3D games have to work and such.

Funny story, I don't actually know what graphics card I have, Im not sure how to check in Linux.

Also, Opening it in Fullscreen = Immediate Death to df.

Ive tried opening it in the terminal and there is no noticeable error in the Terminal.

In Ubuntu there is program called Hardware Drivers, run it and it should show drivers for your videocard, in the same program you can install those drivers.

To quote the Hardware Driver window:

"No proprietary drivers are in use on this system."

And then the two windows below are blank, and the only buttons clickable are Cancel and Help.

Sorry if im being a pain :'(

OK, we will now find out what videocard you have. Open terminal and type lspci in output there should be something like this
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 9500 GT (rev a1)

Have you got installed xserver-xorg-video-intel package? You can install it with command "sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel" or is Synaptic. It may require restart or reloging. After that try to run glxgears in terminal.

connor@connor-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
[sudo] password for connor:

xserver-xorg-video-intel is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

--------------

Glxgears works fine. 3 different colour and size gears rotating.

Then I don't know really. Ummm, your system is 64 or 32 bit? Maybe you lack some libraries? Take a look there http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/System_requirements

If you desktop effects enabled (system->preferences->appearance->visual effects) try disabling them.
