Dragonfire, perhaps?

as per Footkerchief's suggestion, i have this topic to discuss the aspect of dragonfire in DF.

ideas for how it would work, general suggestions and issues are very welcome, post away.

With the new version coming up having layers, it should be just hot enough to literally char to the bone. Direct blasts should do more than combusting from the indirect heat.

Dragon eggs are hatched by breathing fire on them maybe.

Also dragonfire proof armour made out of the dragonfire proof eggs.

It would be nice for range to be calculated and suitably lowered temperatures over a distance. But I digress.

It should char to the bone, but not past it. I'm not sure if Toady has plans to (haven't really been reading devlogs) calculate something going through the layers in reverse order upon slicing through (I'd imagine so), but the fire shouldn't just turn it into a well heated skeleton and a boiling goopy mess. It should basically just shear away all the fleshy layers in front of the bone, unless the corpse is hit by a second blast.

 Actually, Toady di mention different types of breath in development. The only extra thing I remember is the ability to spit 'globs', which are basically the equivalent of molten stone.

 So yes, he is thinking of this.

I agree that dragonfire should drop in temperature over a distance.

One aspect of dragonfire could be immunity/resistance to water, meaning either you have to wait for it to burn itself out/build walls around it to contain it, or dump a LOT OF FREAKING WATER ON IT in order to put it out. This would, of course, be due to the magical nature of the dragonfire.

I may end up modding dragons to spit poison, and/or acid, instead of-or possibly in addition to-magical fire.

Poison, especially, would not only be more realistic, it could also potentially be more dangerous, while acid is just fun. Adding magical fire-especially for the most powerful types of dragons- would be a bonus, but not one without questions and potential drawbacks.

I like to think of dragons as gigantic toads

not only a toads clearly superior to lizards, but also it would be much cooler if they ensnared dwarves with their long tounges and ate them whole


of course, over thousand years of telling and re-telling the legends, the tounges became lost in transition and became fire

What I'd prefer would be for the dragon to spit acid that then ignites.  And I mean that as an in-game effect too-- spray a mist made out of a substance defined by the raws to have a very low ignition point, but also be venomous in and of itself.  It would take one of the "scientific" methods for fire breath and have it have a meaningful in game function.

Because you could then have -bottled- dragonfire.  And have it be useful in all kinds of alchemical reactions...

Preferably, the burning acid would not be utterly consumed, and would thus ALSO effect the target being sprayed.  Fire that also infects with poison.  Nastier than usual!  And when acids go in better, it could also melt metal armor, so that it wouldn't be protection.

And yet we'd still just see fire, because the acid would ignite as soon as it leaves the body.  Dragonscale would of course have to be made immune to this poison acid, as well as heat resistant, so that the dragon won't kill itself (like it currently does!)

Now hold up. There needs to be something resistant to dragonfire that exists outside of what defines the dragon. Otherwise there would be no victories against them, they'd be unstoppable juggernauts.

I'm in favor of dragons leaning much, much further towards "unstoppable juggernaut" status than they currently do, although considering DF's combat, I have my doubts that possessing uber-breath will render them completely unopposable.

Well yes, it should be an impressive feat of arms that would still cost you at least several champions. But it should be possible. With the Rapefire 2.0 proposed above, there's just no damn way besides coralling it into a collapsible segment of land or else drowning it.

Maybe there could be a limit on the amount of times the breath could be used? and also limits on range and accuracy, as well, especially when the dragon is on the ground.

Along with that, dwarfs should have some natural resistance to the poison effect, as well as resisting the acid/fire effects with the clothing (metal armour) they wear, so dragons might not be as uber against dwarfs as they are against other species.
