so i was digging out my fort, like normal, and decieded to build a giant obelisk with all the limestone i had. this went well for about 20 floors, and then i hit the top of the map. is there any way to increase the number of z-levels?

Sorry, as Derakon already said; you're basically stuck. In the future, try pressing tab on embark to cycle through viewing modes. Pick a location with vast elevation differences.
