Single most heavy object a dwarf can haul?
« on: April 30, 2009, 09:30:29 pm »

A "platinum nuggets" is 6420 and the dwarf hauling it is really slowed down.

But is there something heavier that a dwarf can haul?
Does hauling super heavy objects makes a dwarf stronger or a better hauler?
If so, do heavier objects provide more experience points in some way?

There's no upper limit to what a dwarf can move around, but his speed will drastically reduce the heavier it gets.

As for the heaviest thing ever, probably a cage stuffed with every animal in the fortress.

(I was going to say a bin of lead bars, or perhaps galena or native gold blocks, but yours wins hands down.)

Look up "speed" in the wiki.

Ignore all the blather and go straight down the bottom, the little chart under "encumbrance".

That'll answer some of your questions.

Oh cool, I was looking for "Weight" in the wiki but didn't find what I wanted.
Also, from there, I went into the "Attributes"  page and found this:

Quote
Dwarves will not gain attributes if they are doing something that does not involve a skill -- hauling, being stationed on duty (and not in combat), on break, etc.

So then hauling heavy object does not raise Strength skills.
I was hoping to do some sort of hauling gym for dwarfs to haul heavy weights and get stronger.

My dwarf hauled a buggy 1436477r rock barrel the other day, so yes, there appears to be no direct upper limit, but it was slow as hell.

Constructing such a gym would be straightforward -- put some heavy stuff in Stockpile #1, then set Stockpile #2 to take from Stockpile #1 and Stockpile #1 to take from Stockpile #2.

Make you own Sisyphean dwarves!

Make a pump gym.  Out of wood if you've got any sort of forests.  2 pumps/5 dwarves, more or less.  They'll get beefy in no time.

There's no upper limit

Correct...and I guess it's needless to say that this is very unrealistic?  ;D Hopefully Toady will fix this soon enough, along with the infinite big cages.

Eh, I figure Dwarves are stubborn enough to haul just about anything.

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

I know one thing a dwarf can't haul. Another living dwarf. Caged dwarves don't count because the dwarf is in a cage and he's carrying the cage.

Obviously you could actually carry the dwarfen pocket universe.

Just catch evry single living thing and put them in a cage and then put evry single item and stone in a *modded* bin.
