Declassified military orders:

My forces will wait on tile 15. My wolf riders will try to capture as many hostages as possible, and pass them off to the infantry to demoralize the enemy ranged attackers. I intend to harm them as little as possible; they'll make good slaves if there is no real battle.

My hunters will wait on raised terrain, acting as bait. If attacked, they'll stand their ground and fire (prioritizing enemy ranged attackers), while the infantry defend them. My Wolf Riders will wait near the rear of my forces, and attempt to flank and run-down the enemy ranged attackers once the enemy troops are distracted by my infantry.

The weaker infantry and hunters are to be considered fairly expendable, if I can win the battle by using them in high-risk situations.

I'm hoping to make him come to me, while leaving forces to defend his farmlands against a possible attack. If he fails to engage me, I really hope he gets a morale penalty for the military doing nothing while goblins enslave civilians. If he fails to engage, I'm taking my slaves back to the capital. Good for a blood magic research if nothing else.
Curses, you were supposed to defend your farmlands with half your forces. A definite loss for me, especially combined with my lost waterwheel.

D: Could you explain? Also, which order?
"Man, Pandarsenic's getting his ass kicked here. I probably should have had him send some guys up to hassle those hunters. Wait a minute, didn't he give an order to that effect? Well, that might change everything. Crap, I'm going to have to start over."

Also, my "400 dead civilian miners" appears to push me to 15,998 civilians. Do I seriously get deprived of my 16th unit of labor from this? If so, I disband my cavalry and return their equipment to my stockpiles and set them to work so I do get my 16th labor point. :I Dremmeur Sai and Keyiro Mitheinous may be required to work like everyone else for a turn to make up that last labor point.
Funny, but they're already counted in the population figure. Sucks, but hey, you can't win them all.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stozuagun and the remnants of the goblin army returned to Zrlv. After three days of mourning their defeat, Glrk'nr met with his advisers. "The humans were strong, and have beaten our armies twice. We can't fight both them and the raiders. I'm ceding victory to the humans." The goblins listening had expected something of the sort. It was natural for the strong to lead the weak, after all. They just had never thought of themselves as weaker then humans. "I'm sending them a hefty tribute; Stozuagun: you and the strongest military company will provide escort for it."

After a few moments of silent contemplation of their defeat, he began to talk once more. "Does anyone else have anything to report?"

Xengbubukza, now confident enough from his victory to speak, finally spoke up: "I think if there is a way to copy what we say on parchment, there is a way to draw places on parchment. I could explore new places better if I wasn't exploring the same places twice."

Glrk'nr nodded. "Very well. Kazastrugu? Meet with him him later to figure something out." I need to go torture some prisoners, somebody be sure a new water wheel is built. I also think we could build something to stimulate the economy, and improve taxes. I'll leave that to you, Kazastrugu.

((If I still get 19 labor, I'd like a marketplace instead of a granary. Yay, a marketplace.))

No, they don't.

Oh, and Nirur, you do still get the 19 labor. Labor losses won't kick in until next turn.

The latest guard recruits continue practicing with their new weapons while they wait for the armorers to finish their equipment. With the city gradually getting more and more crowded some of the Asykos question whether the increased guard presence is actually helping any or only exacerbating the problems of crowding. Some of the militiamen yearn to seek out and punish the raiders themselves. Others with more foresight point out that if there are raiders in the wilderness that there may be other peoples surviving out in the wild, and argue for a more peaceful expedition. Thus far Amnarchis has yet to show any signs of approval for such ventures, though.

"Self-sufficiency is a virtue. What could those outside possibly provide us that we can not provide ourselves?"

"Charity is also a virtue, is it not? Even if others have little to offer us, we undoubtedly have much to offer them."

"And they are welcome to join us any time they wish. Let those who seek to share in our progress emigrate to our great city, and we will welcome them with open arms."

"Our city is crowded enough as it is, Patriarch! You ask what the outside world has to offer us, and the answer is clear: Land. Space. Living room. Our city cannot support its own growth indefinitely. Remember that Antemnon of old was but one city in a vast empire; if we wish to recapture its former glory we cannot do so alone."

"I do not deny that there will be challenges. Look around you, though. Fifteen years ago we could have scarcely have hoped to support a city this size. Now thanks to the progress we have made in our research we can earn great surpluses with little labor. It is within the halls of the Library that our future lies, not in the great plains beyond our borders. And it is within the halls of the Library that my immediate future lies, as well. Good day, gentlemen."

John let out a yawn. Was was the point of these meetings anyway? The people were in charge of the government, not the other way around. The only real job they have is organizing the (ungrateful) workforce. Well, at least the recent victory has caused most of the population to be a little more friendly. the huge stack of loot also helped. However, the city has grown overcrowded, and there is already talks of riots.

"How do solve this problem of ours?" ask John to his advisors.

"well, the only two solutions i can think of is either expand the city, or build another city elsewhere and have people moved there." explained Richard

John frowned "those are the only two?"

"Well, there is a third, but giving the citizens weapons and having them sort it out on their own would probably wouldn't end well."

John put his head in hands. Why is it never easy? "Okay, we are going to put some research into 'Town building'. we might have to put the horse domestication on hold. we have to send out some exploratoin teams to find a good place, considering the last two places are filled with monster and angry people."

(I don't see how I only spent 2 gold on upkeep last turn with 3 military units. Why don't you believe I have two warrior units? What did they ever do to you?)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stozuagun and Xengbubukza had already went north with the two warrior units to find and destroy the encampment of lizardmen. Glrk'nr, Kazastrugu, and some iron defender guards were examining the iron mine. "These maps should be very useful. After you've finished them, I want you to come up with ways to improve iron output. We lost the last war because we just didn't have enough."

"I'll see what we can do. There are probably richer veins deep underground, if I can figure out a more efficient method of getting them without the workers all dying before they get to it. I also have an idea for something like the water wheel that can be built anywhere, further increasing iron production."

"Good. Make it so, I want to be ready for the next war when we find another foe."
