The Zrlv forces, seeking to do as much damage as quickly as possible, split their forces and march around the city towards the Neo-Tyrgani farmland. The Neo-Tyrgani horsemen, with their superior mobility, easily intercept the goblin spearmen in the plains south of the city, and the opposing warriors meet each other in the farmlands of tile 2. In a swift and brutal encounter, the horsemen smash the attacking spearmen, routing them in less than an hour. They pursue and cut down the fleeing remnants, effectively destroying the unit. The fighting in the north is more even, but the attackers begin taking heavy casualties, and as the defending horsemen begin moving back in to support the warriors, General Stozuagun orders a retreat. They manage to escape into the mountains before the defenders can encircle them, and the battered survivors begin the long march home.

Glrk'nr unhappily read the message from Stozuagun, then read it again. He just wanted to bring the goblin civilization to glory, but it seemed they would be forced to achieve glory by bloody conquest. So be it. He dismissed the out-of-breath messenger, and wrote up plans to expand the military using the new bows. Those humans wouldn't stand a chance against the full brunt of the goblin military, especially if the forges were to be ready soon.

He ate a glowing mushroom. They really were good. Glrk'nr hoped that they would stop the populace from getting too upset once word of the first Zrlv military action being a complete defeat.

"I can hardly see things in such black-and-white terms, Shi Shotan. The goblins, as well as us, have their own goals and aspirations and-"

"Dremmeur, do not try to sympathize with the inhuman wretches. It's just wasteful. We're mobilizing our military in full force - the Falcons of Khas are teaching these wet-behind-the-ears children who want to be soldiers to be men. Now, tell me what we've learned of warfare from the Old Tyrgani archives."

Dremmeur sighed. (Rimshot) "The old Tyrgani had a few particular weapons they liked a great deal. Swords,axes, and hammers, mainly."

"Explain?" Shi Shotan asked, intrigued. "Bladed weapons. A sword is a length of sharpened metal or stone, while an axe is a plate of sharpened metal or stone on the end of a rod, essentially, which uses the weight of the blade to split shields, armor and flesh. A hammer-"

"We use hammers now," Shi Shotan interrupted. "But how would you hold this 'sword' without cutting yourself?" he asked, confused. Dremmeur smiled.

"Well, it has a handle, of course."

"Ahh, I see..." Shi Shotan murmured. "Research axes. I want a weapon that can smash the goblin shields to tinder!"

His work complete, Ramades turns over management of the newly built workshops to his pupil Arbelos, once an apprentice and now a master in his own right. The young master exhibits an enthusiasm for developing bows that even the down-to-earth Ramades finds unsettling, but as the first watchmen begin patrolling the streets the people admit there is a certain advantage to the new weapons. Ramades himself turns his attention to erecting a second watermill to help feed the ever-growing population.

Although many of Antemnon's scholars are occupied studying the new watermill and working to improve its design, a fair number remain at the New Library. Here Amnarchis leads experiments in trying to work the newfound iron ore into usable forms.

Alastair: The old zefie settlements could have many more people than we sixteen thousand, without being crowded. Hell, in times of war, we were able to fit many more than that inside the boundaries of our walls.

Tikhon: If we want to commence mining operations, it would be worth it for us to finish construction of the mechanic’s shop,
Alastair: If we must expand somewhere else, I’ll need an escort with it. We need spears and swords. That’s 11,000 zefies to build all of that, plus more for additional wood.
Zefie Farmer: I’ll have 4,000 for farming then? I think that I can get us to make it, but we’ll almost certainly need to dig into our reserve somewhat.
Alastair: Very well. Make it happen. Bea, authorize the reserve stocks of clothes to go out, we will NOT let this depression go further. Cia, get the production orders in for the spears and shields, do a half order of each while we wait for additional wood. Draw up a volunteer force of 100 as well. I will be in command.

<Mechanic’s workshop>
   The pulleys and gears were only partially constructed, the zefies who had been working before were somewhat depressed, maybe they shouldn’t have goofed off so much? Tikhon got on a block of stone and addressed his engineers.
Tikhon: I know that we’re all feeling a little glum; however, we  have got to look for the future. We are getting additional workers now. Over twice what we had last year. I want you to train them quickly. This project gets done quickly and safely. Let’s get to work then..

<Northern Woods>
The zefie loggers went about their tasks of cutting logs and gathering food. The army needed weapons. Simultaneously, the remaining stone stocks were on their way with the irrigation team to set up additional facilities. Wood had quickly became a crucial resource.

<War District>
Cia, military advisor of the zefies, hurriedly got his workers working. Alastair drilled a hundred volunteers in marching and calisthenics while they waited for their accouterments.

<Fashion Area>
The area was deserted except for Bea and a couple of workers, carrying bundles of gaily colored sashes to be handed out,

<Farm Guildhall>
   The guild master looked at what had once been a much larger workforce. They were needed for other things he supposed. He ordered his men into five teams, four of them would farm. The last would be in charge og distributing supplies of food to the Fortress. He couldn’t believe that he’d have to raid the granary. It started to rain outside.

   Zefie Advisor A: The zefies have hit a roadblock. Our continue excellent growth and happiness is dependant on us figuring a way to get around our crowding, Let’s roll.

Starting to feel the pinch of crowding, the Jerrans were motivated out of their previous sloth.  Some embraced metropolitan, thinking it would pay to consider how to best use the space they had.  But the "tribals" claiming lineage from those of the southeast were the most vocal proponents of pushing outward, saying they should resettle the lands of their ancestors.

He wasn't %100 sure what it was made of, but judging by the fact that his food tester didn't drop dead, it wasn't poisoned, so he didn't care. Across the table sat Jen, who seemed a little worse for wear, was drinking something she called a 'smoothy'. "I don't see why you drink that crap"

"It's all natural" Jen responded "and besides, yours is probably made from some guy's bones"

"Nightshade is also natural, but you don't see me eating it" John quipped, while looking though his notes. "Now, for the reason we're here: I want you to be in charge of the new military school I'm building this year."

"I thought you would be more worried about the "research" halls that Richard built without your permission."

"I already talked to him. I told him if I didn't see some actual research, he'll be eating through a tube"

Shi Shotan takes his forces west across the foothills south of the mountains, pursuing the retreating goblins. As the trail leads them into the mountains themselves, however, his cavalry begins having difficulties, as their mounts prove ill-suited to mountaineering. He quickly loses the trail and has to perform a more systematic search. He finds the headwaters of a river flowing south, but no sign of the goblins.
Things at home go well. Dremmeur Sai and his research team devise obsidian-edged wooden swords, razor-sharp and dangerous, and have no trouble building stone warhammers. Axes prove more difficult, however, as obsidian proves too prone too breakage to make large axeheads practical, and copper too soft to hold an edge. On the plus side, however, they have finished their research into mining techniques.
The laborers and craftsmen building military workshops work diligently, inspired by the recent attack, and prepare well-designed, efficient workplaces. The bulk of the construction of the military school is completed, but without General Shi Shotan's input, the workers are unable to add the finishing touches.
Morale is buoyed by the great battle won within sight of the city, and the people are happy and confident.

The zefies, rather more motivated to build than usual, set about their work. Construction goes as planned, and the harvest is as good as expected. The new military is armed and dangerous, ready to stab whatever needs stabbing.
The Zefie researchers, after looking into and discarding several strategies for alleviating the city's overcrowding issue, eventually settle on the simplest solution: if the city isn't big enough, make it bigger. Letting the city sprawl out into the countryside isn't an ideal solution, but it's certain to be effective. Of course, the walls will have to be extended first.

The city is not idle while their warriors are away. Zrlv researchers perfect their metalworking process, and discover a good source of iron south of the city. One goblin in particular distinguishes himself in the effort, an older individual the other researchers have begun deferring to and calling a sage. A unit of archers is also produced in this time.
When the tattered remnants of the expedition return in mid-summer, however, morale begins flagging. The people are discouraged by their defeat, but not so discouraged that Stozuagun is unable to whip his remaining warriors back into something resembling a fighting force.

Bonnie, after considering the issue of open-sea travel for several days, says that she doesn't know how she could effectively navigate away from the shore; the risk of being lost at sea is simply too great. She sets off to the west in the Pearl Queen. They return a few months later, limping into port with a damaged hull and a broken mast. Bonnie and several sailors come ashore, carrying the head of the sea serpent they encountered. These beasts are not unknown, but this one was exceptionally large - the head alone is nearly four feet long. The seas, it seems, are not as safe as the sailors might wish. Fortunately, their pride in victory outweighs the shock of attack, and Bonnie is rapidly becoming a major figure in society.
Things at home have, thankfully, been less eventful. The harvest has, once again, been good, and the granary begins to fill. Brennan and the city's researchers have been experimenting with new mechanical and architectural designs, and construction in and out of the city is going well. Finally, the city's second ship is beginning to take shape in the dockyard, alongside the maimed Pearl Queen.

The second watermill is completed, incorporating a few new ideas but not, on the whole, much more efficient than the first. The city's new milita is trained, equipped, and begins patrolling the streets, enforcing the law with remarkable even-handedness.

They go off in several different directions, producing a few promising ideas but nothing concrete or practical.

Stozuagun, Xenbubukza: The humans will no doubt be looking for us. Try to find and harass their exploration teams. Delay them until we rebuild our military. If you can't find any explorers, find any further terrain advantages between us. We won't need the edge, but it's more fun to win a humiliating victory."

"Watch carefully, my boy, because we've only a little of this substance," Dremmeur Sai spoke with a smile. Shi Shotan watched attentively.

They were not in their usual meeting place in the shrine atop the Citadel. What they were about to do was not something to do in a Shrine.

Dremmeur struck his flint block against the steel wall of the Citadel and the spark jumped to some powder. The powder flared up and the spark traveled down it.

"Fascinating!" Shi Shotan muttered.

"Get down!" Dremmeur snapped, dragging Shi Shotan behind an overturned metal table before the spark reached the barrel.

"What in Khas's name!?" Shi Shotan screamed, terrified. He looked up from his cover; fragments of the barrel, both the wooden siding and the metal braces, had been blasted across the room. He turned to Dremmeur, a twinkle in his eye. "Learn to produce it by whatever means necessary!"
