A springtime storm rolls through the city, thunder crashing across the hills. The ruins of the Great Library were repeatedly struck by lighting - over a dozen times, by one count - but when the storm passed no damage was found. It seems to be a good omen, but the ever-practical Asykos pay it no mind.
The year is a productive one nevertheless, though. Another watermill is built in the forest, improving lumber production there. More significantly, the city's researchers discover that gold is not as useless as they thought; it has magical properties that make it ideal for powering magical constructs. They learn to create more vigorous constructs which, while they're far too mindless to do any work on their own, provide a valuable power source for more conventional mechanical devices. By replacing the waterwheel of a mill with a power-generating construct, for instance, they propose a self-driving mill could be created anywhere, providing mechanical power not tied to the river.
Ill fortune strikes the city towards the end of the year, however. A band of raiders arrives on horesback from the south, and roll through the eastern fields as they come, killing those unfortunate enough to be caught and stealing whatever they can find. As they approach the city, the militia greets them with a hail of arrows. The ensuing battle is long and bloody, and the milita takes heavy casualties, but do damage to drive the raiders off. Damage is far less than it could have been, but still significant.
