Amnarchis was strolling through the halls of the New Library when it happened, supervising the scholars hard at work. Ramades followed him, discussing in quiet tones plans for further upgrades to the reborn city's infrastructure.

Gradually the sage became aware of a ripple of hushed excitement spreading throughout the Library. The Asykos were not given to idle gossip, but when they had information of importance to share they could spread it with great efficiency.

In the main hall a sizable crowd was forming around one young researcher. After a moment's study Amnarchis recognized him as Mesthones, a pupil who had only received his scholar's sash a few years ago. A quiet fellow, with little to distinguish himself. At the patriarch's approach he nervously fiddled with his own notes. The gathered crowd waited at polite attention.

Amnarchis said nothing, stood looking over the fragments of well-preserved parchment. The Asykos had never managed to reproduce the material the ancients used for their records, but wondrous as it was it would still crumble to dust if not given extensive care. He recognized this as a particularly old work, written in the Old Script. He frowned, taking a moment to translate the intricate glyphs.

"'On the Works of Zan Anthronar. Volume III.'" An appreciative murmur flickered through the crowd; the name Zan Anthronar had appeared in several of the histories detailing the emergence of the Asykos themselves. From what anyone could gather, he was a philosopher whose works predated the creation of the Asykos, with some implication that he had laid the groundwork for their construction. "Odd, I have never seen these scraps before. I thought I was familiar at least in passing with all the surviving documents of the Old Script."

"Well, yes. I surmise that they had somehow been lost in the Old Library. During the transfer here someone must have turned it up and put it in with the rest."

"This... if this is what I think it is, it could hold the secrets we have sought in vain for generations. By all the gods, Ancient and New, we may at last learn the full story of our origins--the creation of life by mortal means." Amnarchis looked around at the assembled scholars. "These will take a long time to decipher in full. Mesthones will head this project himself; I will lend what assistance I can. Shelve whatever you are working on. Anyone not involved in the translation, scour the archives. We must see if there are any further records of this work."

At the back of the crowd, Ramades clears his throat. "This is your new direction, Patriarch? I thought we were looking to the future, not the past. Our ancestors spent centuries rooting through the library. For what? Tales of a failed civilization? Forget the past, Amnarchis. There are more important things to do."

The engineer turns and leaves. Several scholars reluctantly follow; Amnarchis makes no move to stop them.

John and Jen looked through the various notes that had come from the "hall of learning" ("hall of learning my ass" said John). Most of it didn't look like research, even less was even legable. "Maybe I should have been more specific" Said john as he looked at something that looked like plans for some kind of building.

"Well, this looks interesting" said Jen, as she looked at a weird diagram. John looked over, gave it a quick examination, then grabbed the top of it and turned it right-side up. Jen looked at it again, and dropped it with a scream like a huge spider popped out of it. She then stuffed it down the chute yelling "PERVERTED. OLD. MAN!"

"If we keep this up, we're going to run out of paper" John realized. All of the paper ever used had been stocked piled when the Bandit King had first created this city, and had be recycled over and over. John was amazed that there was any left.

"Are you going to hang him by his toes now?" jen asked

"Sadly, no. I'm going to give him one more try. And then we hang him by this toe"

While Dremmeur Sai busies himself with the study of things that burn, boil, and go boom, life goes on for the rest of the Neo-Tyrgani. The demand for wood inspires some to build a village in the forest south of town, where they set up more efficent logging operations. Craftsmen working with obsidian manufacture wickedly sharp blades and heavy warhammers, and the farmers bring in enough food that the granaries don't need to be drained too heavily. Shi Shotan puts the finishing touches on his military school and prepares to build up his forces in anticipation of the next battle with the goblins.
Dremmeur Sai's research is not completed by the end of the year, but it is showing great promise. He's found a rich source of pyromantic energies in a type of flower that grows around volcanic springs in the mountains. Ember roses, as they are called, have been known for years for their faint crimson luminescence, but now Dremmeur is putting them to practical use, finding new ways to unlock and channel this resource.
The patrolling horsemen explore the area around the city, looking for signs of enemy activity. They find that there is a forest in the hills to the south, and that the city's river continues to the east. The western river continues south out of the mountains, through the foothills. They encounter goblins there, but neither side seems willing to commit to battle. After a bit of inconclusive skirmishing, they withdraw. They report that some of the goblins are equipped with devices that fire short feathered spears, and bring a couple captured examples of each. They're not really sure how they're used, though.

The zefies, after expanding their walls, begin gratefully spilling out into the newly constructed suburbs. While the reduced food stockpiles are a source of some concern, most citizens are quite happy with the new breathing room.
Research efforts have been productive in a rather unexpected way. While little headway has been made into further overcrowding relief or metalworking, they've developed, almost by accident, a system of writing. It started as a method of taking notes on their work, but it somehow made its way into use in the marketplaces, and from there to a significant chunk of the population.

Kazastrugu and his researchers, mindful of what happened last time they tried rearing wolves, study how to tame and care for some more readily available animals. By the end of the year, they're confident that if more wolves can be captured, they'll be able to keep them alive. They can't promise much more than that, though; they'll need some hands-on experience with the wolves themselves.
The iron mine is completed quickly, and the miners, long accustomed to work underground, have no trouble producing ore. Smelting it is a less familiar task, but it's a puzzle the Zrlv researchers have already solved. By the end of the year, a few iron blades have started to show up in the city, although the lack of a proper smithy impedes their production.
Stozuagun and Xengbubukza return late in the year, reporting contact with enemy scouts in the foothills along the river between the two cities. They couldn't catch the swift horseriders, but were able to harry them until they retreated. They say few soldiers were killed on either side.

Disaster! A hurricane blows in from the south, ravaging the Jerran countryside! Damage to the city is thankfully light, but both the Pearl Queen and the ship being constructed are smashed and washed out to sea, and the fishing village west of the city is reduced to tinders. Many have died, and the mood among the survivors is grim.
Thankfully, not all the news is as bad. The harvest is worse than anticipated, but still sufficient to feed the populace, and the city's new lighthouse/watchtower was built before the hurricane struck and weathered the storm. The city's researchers, presumably distracted, make little headway in their work, but the town's craftsmen manage to bounce back, and their production is nearly on schedule.

The citizenry is rather upset by their leaders' quarreling, but, in their typical fashion, don't let it interfere with their work. The militia reports only a slight increase in crime; they had feared worse.
Another watermill is erected along the river, and the city's harvest goes well. Amnarchis's followers, for their part, learn quite a bit about animating unliving objects. Their creations can scarcely be called "alive", but can move and, in a limited way, interact with their environment.

Ragt'ich, as always, is filled with a bustling and only slightly malevolent energy. The city's researchers, under Richard's anxious eye, work out good farming techniques, even if farming does require more manual labor than they'd like. Tiny shrines, dedicated to a dizzying array of gods and spirits, begin springing up across the city like mushrooms. No one is really sure why, but most people can find a place to pay their respects to whatever entity they worship somewhere in the city.

A messenger handed a piece of paper to Stozuagun, who was eating glowing mushrooms with Xengbubukza. Stozuagun opened it and began to read. "It's from Glrk'nr. He wants us to go look for more wolf pups, says that we're finally ready for them. Wolves may be useful, but it's a waste of time. The humans will keep searching for us."

"Well, let's get going anyway. I'm out of glowing mushrooms."

Kazastrugu wrote down theories about ways in which the workers would be able to further harness the river to improve the rate at which mushrooms grew. Glrk'nr wanted more food for the ever growing populace, and the sage knew that failure would not be tolerated.

Glrk'nr chopped off a criminal's arm with one swing, and frowned. It was just too easy with this new iron sword. Sure, it had the potential for killing more easily, but it just wasn't nearly as much fun as some other weapons were. Regardless, the military needed them to beat the humans back easily. He wrote a note reminding himself to get somebody to build a smithy to produce enough swords for his entire military.

Alastair: What is our over-population state?
Zefie Advisor A: Sir, our statistics department has prepared a report.
Zefie Statician E: With the expansion of our walls, we are able to cover about 20,000 zefies. However, our calculations tell us that we will surpass that within two years, so further expansion is necessary.
Tikhon: We have the extra morale to do this extra work, so it would be best to do it sooner rather than later.
Alastair: Can we work around most of our population being involved in stone?
Zefie Mason F: Very much so, sir. We could also start to dig mines, to capitalize on the stone-working streak we’ll be in.
Alastair: Since when did you talk?
Zefie Mason: I’m cast now! I can even make fourth wall jokes.
Tikhon: I suppose that you’d be suited for it, wouldn’t you.
Alastair: Didn’t I order the fourth wall repaired several turns ago?
Zefie Military Advisor Cia: We accidentally destroyed it to make the barracks, actually.
Alastair: And no one bothered to tell me?
Cia: We left you a memo?
Alastair: But we only discovered writing this last year?!

Zefie Advisor A: We actually sort of forgot what we were assigned to research, so we worked on writing ourselves notes.
Tikhon: You discovered writing as a way to write your own tasks down?
Alastair: And 2,000 some zefies couldn’t remember to research metalworking and expansion?
Zefie Advisor A: Errrrr.
Alastair: How much progress was made on the primary research avenues?
Zefie Advisor A: I’m sure that literacy will have some effect on expansion. Hopefully. Possibly.
Zefie Statician E: From my offices rough calculations, we will only be able to spare one work unit on research this turn.
Zefie Advisor A: Very well, it’ll be fine for my teams to get out in  the field and actually do stuff. Do you want the focus on Expansion again, sir?
Cia: The draft yearly plan lacks any provision for expanding the military. With word of cities and bandits, I don’t like only having a hundred troops with pokey sticks.
Alastair: we’ll stockpile additional wood this turn. Research will be concentrated on metalworking. If we can get iron weapons that will be good, otherwise we’ll role with simple wood spears again. The home guard will be completed sometime next turn. After that, we will see to constructing an expeditionary army to find other beleaguered cities.
Zefie Farmer D: It’s good to see that we will be able to do enough farming this year. I think that the rebuilding of our surplus would be an idea for the future.
Tikhon: Make a note of it in the minutes.
Zefie Scribe G: So noted.
Alastair: How did we take meeting minutes before we had writing?
Zefie Scribe G: Pictures sir.
Alastair: Can I see them?
Zefie Scribe G: I’m not the best artist, sir.

Bea: When you gave all of them other jobs, I was the only one left, so it ended up with me.
Zefie Advisor A: And you have no intention of returning it, I take it.
Zefie Mason F: She decided that she prefers rocks, actually.
Alastair: Very well. Plan approved. Cia, make sure the troops that we have are well drilled. We can’t spare much, but our best must be the best. Any other business?
