Bauxite mining in china ... some of the mentioned Dwarfy side effects...

"irreparable damage to the environment"
"displace ethnic-minority groups" (chasm dwellers?)
"(will) leave vast scars on the landscape"
"toxic 'red sludge' "
The Vietnamese oppose continued mining, and feel themselves "under threat of invasion"
due to the increased wealth, "10,000 settlers are expected" in the mining area.

Just keepin' y'all apprised.

When you think about it China sort of serves as a model for quite a few DF concepts.  I mean, you've got megaprojects, impossible demands by "nobles", a population that rises rapidly to a cap then stops, a lack of respect for the lives of citizens, and probably quite a few other obvious ones I'm missing.

Here's hoping they're not making bauxite floodgates as part of their "flood the world with magma" project.

While they're often giving a scottish accent and love of liquor I've honestly always thought of the chinese as the biggest model for dwarves, especially in DF.

To add to the list: Technologically ahead of their peers (They have steel when everyone else doesn't), huge long lasting water based diversion/damming projects, have to deal with the constantly invading hoardes (which they deal with, of course, by building a wall across the world). Absolute whizzes with basic machinery. (They built humanlike clockwork automatons within the time period of DF).

The only thing that's all that different is that the chinese had explosives(Which again, dwarves seem to have an unnatural affinity for in most games if not DF) and Dwarves like to live underground.

I have heard that the Dwarf concept among the Norse peoples of Scandinavia originated from Vikings who sailed into and across the Mediterranean (yes they routinely went that far they were expert navigators).  In the area of modern Lebanon they encountered people of Persian decent who were much smaller then the Scandinavians and possessed vastly better metallurgical technology, hence Dwarves.

Not to mention the Yangshan deepwater port for the tradedepots of shanghai. Sadly they didnt build this port with magma.
