Oh MAN I just had an awesome game. Me and this Mokshu guy built all these awesome castles on a map. We even had a series of jumps along the map. Salmeuk was there. He saw it. :P

Anyway, I saved the map. I'm going to play it every time I host a server.

Very cool. This game exudes DF, from the messages you get when you die to the obsessive-compulsiveness you get to make everything perfect. . .

On the saved map I'm making a sacrifice altar that goes to the bottom of the map. Also very dwarfy.

I've been able to open .lvl files in Notepad++
They consist of 262,144 lines of "X,X"; X can be any number from 0 to 5, as far as I've seen. The most common value is 0,0.
262144 = 643 , so each map must consist of 64 blocks on each side.
If we can interpret this with a simple program, we can easily load these files and edit them directly, and thus paint interesting shapes or challenging maps. Or just maps consisting of nothing but diamonds and magma...

Or, we could figure out a way to export from DF into IM; Imagine a 643 section of, for instance, the magmaworks of a mature fortress.

Or custom competition maps, say, a floating island made of gold and diamonds hovering 40-50 tiles up and the two teams' bases on the very bottom.

Or, a cache of diamonds that can only be accessed by the red team- adjacent to the blue team's base, and vice versa.

Or, a solid cube of dirt, lava, stone, gold, and diamonds. No blank spaces.

Or, a premade city with roads, buildings, and everything, that can be blown to bits.

Or, Nevada.

Or, "the perfect embark location" complete with hillside, magma tube, and chasm.

Wow, great job PTTG!
I wonder if Zach could be convinced to add some kind of modability to this game... Just immagine what more could be done :D
Ofcourse, he's still busy fixing the current bugs...

Anyone built a tower that goes from the very bottom to the top of the map?
