Oh yeah, I saw that Realism mode locked in the demo.  I've been wondering what it is, thoughts?

Details so far: highlights are gone entirely - you cannot see where your teammates are if they're not in line-of-sight, and you cannot tell their health etc. Zombies can still be damaged with body hits but it's much more work than head shots. The witch gets one-hit-kills. And much more.

The witch already makes one-hit kills sometimes in the Xpert mode. I hope they remove the whole "stand up buddy" thing or decrease it to 1 try, because it would be much funnier.

Also that many coachs is due to the fact that it's NOT a versus mode, it just allows you to become infected while a bot takes your survivor. If you switch back, the bot stays, so you have 2 the same players, and if you continue to play as infected the game thinks that you're dead (not amongst survivors) so you're rescueable from special areas, which adds more bots, etc.

That was a fun session we had. I can't wait until the full version is out. I might make the effort to invest in it. Been some time since a good game has been released these days.

I still can't believe that after dying, the bots actually were smart enough to finish the demo. Considering the AI practically goes dumb by the time you reach the trailer; after passing that, they actually worked together and closed the door. I think about 6 coaches survived, plus 2 other characters.

Hahaha, that was epic...  A full-blown war between survivors and infected.  It's weird when the weapon drops actually run out of guns...   I ended up getting stuck with just a machete, and that's only because I managed to snag it before someone else did.  Heh, had some good times slashing my way through all the blighters.  Only time I got a gun was later on, when one of the Coaches died and I nabbed his shotgun.

Speaking of which, something kinda funny happened when we got to the new map...  The extra Coaches died off, leaving only me (I was playing as Coach, funnily enough).  I had very low health, a pipe bomb, a machete, and a shotgun.

Then, later on, when I initiated cloning procedures again, I noticed that all of the newly-created Coaches had some peculiar traits.  Namely, they were all very low on health, and they all carried shotguns, pipe bombs, and machetes.

Apparently, the game somehow stores inventory on a per-character basis.  Since they were all the same character, well...  They all got the same inventory.


And man, lemme tell you...  Wearing down a pack of eight survivors is TOUGH.  Even on expert, when the mindless horde usually steamrolls the AI survivors.  But there's just some sort of sick satisfaction that comes from sliming the whole group of 'em with one boomer...

Deon, dude!  Stick with the pack!  I could pick you out from a mile away, what with how you were the only one who was completely alone and isolated from the rest of the group.  It's dangerous out there, mate!  Lots of nasty Jockeys and Hunters and Smokers who'd like to have some fun with your helpless little body.


We have got to do that again some time.  Ohh, man...  If only we could tweak the server settings.  Then we could get the 1000-strong panic events vs. a veritable ARMY of Coaches!  Plus, there's a console command that makes AI survivors fire their weapons non-stop.  Mmmm...


Speaking of console commands, this should cover most of them.  Of special note are "z_common_limit" and "director_force_panic", not to mention "director_panic_forever".

"z_spawn tank" is also fun.  Do remember, however, that most if not all of these require cheats to be enabled,  Bugger.

Looking through that list. Extra sounds a little too easy now. Also, if you can survive the onslaught that we had going on, expert is now normal.

What should we name the new custom mode for this new potential level of madness?
Extra Mode?
"Just one little problem..."?

Bind it to a key for easy access.  And really, you don't know what you're missing until you've ramped up z_common_limit to the higher hundreds and launched a panic attack.

As for the custom mode, I'd say either 'Knee-Deep in the Dead' or 'HFS'.  Possibly '28 Seconds Later'.

At least with the first, the force panic event commands didn't do shit, other than start the music going (and when I last tried them, which I believe pre-dated the SDK). Also, be careful with the infected limits, or you can crash the server without trying too hard. One hundred iterations of z_spawn is enough to crash a home computer, both my laptop (hosting a local game over my campus wifi, which gives remarkably fast speed, even for people across the country), or in single player (I also saw another guy make that mistake, and I think he had a more powerful machine: we didn't have enough people for a game, so I told him about the different cheat commands, and we bullshitted around with them for a while, until he made a script that spawned one hundred commons on his head and crashed. ::))

I'm hoping that Realism mode makes voice-chat come from the your avatar.  Meaning that when you're far away, they might not be able to hear you--but they might be able to shout 'Over here!' and let you find them from directional sound alone.

Well, I was mucking around in singleplayer and I managed to not only get the panic events to work, but also had enough infected spawns going to summon a veritable sea of the walking dead in the park area. 

Maybe they actually did improve upon a few things for L4D2.  Dunno.


And I'd be roaring for a match right now, if it weren't for the fact that I should really get around to TFTD.

Maybe they patched it in at some point, I just remember firing it over and over again, and getting nothing. But remember, this was a long time and a number of patches ago, so who knows. Or I may be misremembering it, and it was just panic_forever or whatever it was that didn't do anything.

I wonder if we can have a mode where you get to have EIGHT survivors?

Obviously you'd need new maps to keep them separate, but it could be pretty fun, one team could rain hell down on the other's problems from a rooftop or something.

Also, Unlimited panic events will be FUN if we can get them to work.
