Thread on the Steam L4D2 forum for splitscreen. I don't really know much about it.

I got sv_cheats 1 to work by downloading the dedicated server for L4D2, then going into console and using the "map [mapname]" command. Messed around a little. It's pretty easy to increase the number of Infected and decrease spawn time. I just need to get the relevant commands down so I don't have to constantly look them up and then I'd be ready to do that for L4D2 Mutation Day/Night. Well, assuming people can join games of "Map [mapname]".

TURNS OUT THEY CAN'T
=/

I have yet to figure out how to get sv_cheats to work in joinable games other than dedicated servers I would buy. I can't even get it so that I can join a dedicated server game I run myself. More experimenting is necessary.

I hate to triple post, but it's been several days. A few things:

L4D2 got a non-Mutation update:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Since I've been having troubles getting sv_cheats 1 (and thus a lot of other commands) to work in joinable L4D2 games, I opened up L4D and started playing around with it. Things worked nicely. I still haven't found a console command that lets you change the number of Special Infected, but that can be rectified somewhat by decreasing SI spawn time.

I also took a peek at the L4D forums on Steam. I found a server mod that implements realistic lighting, a more dynamic Director (including dynamic pathing, a la L4D2), and more, called Left 4 Dead Apocalypse. It looks nice, but is still in development, so they guy hasn't released it yet and it's only on one server. I would totally be up for getting a DFC server with this for us to play on once he releases it to the public. He said that the changes are done separately, so we'd be able to choose what we want to use instead of having to use what we don't like along with what we do like.

So I just played through vanilla L4D on Dead Air, with the only changes being both common and Special Infected spawn rate (lowered) and mob numbers (60-80 on normal mobs). I must say, even on Easy, it's very fun. Only bad part is no achievements, which aren't that big of a deal anyway.

The first Left 4 Dead, even vanilla, is a lot more atmospheric than the second for the most part.

DOUBLE POST TIME

L4D1's DLC has been announced. Un/Fortunately (Take your pick), it's being released for both L4D games, not just the first game. And L4D2 still gets more loving, as they're including the original survivors and No Mercy to play in 2 along with the new campaign. I'm disappointed by the choice to have the DLC for L4D2 as well, especially with Chet's given reasoning behind it: "you played The Passing and now you want to see what led up to this, we don't want to make you go buy L4D1, we want to be able to give it to you in DLC as well."

Unless they also provide Mutations and other updates to L4D2 (Tank stasis in Versus, community campaigns) that should have very well applied to the first L4D, I'm disappointed in the L4D team at Valve for all but abandoning the first L4D. The DLC being available for the first L4D seems like an afterthought here, despite them announcing it months before this DLC being available for the second L4D.

Really? So because they made it available to everyone, you are angry?

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

My opinion on l4d.
If the stereotypical characters were nothing to hate the first game was pretty fun and pretty much just a arcade zombie shooter with annoying dialog and not overly used weapons no one wants to see anymore. Easily worth the 30$ I paid for it.

l4d2 was simply put a racist, sterotypical, arcade shooter with zombies.
The characters were horrible, the game was the same as before, the chainsaw is stupid, the new weapons made any old weapon suck and were unbalanced.
The levels were the same old boom boom rush rush creshendo event, except with more creshendo events in the levels between each session of boom boom rush rush.

to be frank about it, l4d2 was the worst game valve has ever released in my opinion.
That being said l4d was fun and nice to play with friends.

Err... Both games had "stereotypical" characters, both were arcade zombie shooters, and you played neither for the dialog, and yet L4D2 sucks.

What makes the character so racist, the chainsaw so stupid, and the new weapons so much more preferable?

The game is really whatever you make out of it, and it sounds like you're making a pinata out of L4D2 because it was made after L4D1.

It's not because it was after l4d1, I would have still liked l4d more than l4d2 even if l4d2 was released first.

Nope. It'll be interesting to see the differences between how the shared campaigns between L4D1 and L4D2 (The Sacrifice and No Mercy) play, what with differing weapons and SI. I'm just disappointed because L4D2 gets updates that L4D1 could very well use as well.

[PPE:] I'm not sure what you mean by "racist," Saint. Unless you're saying that the only people who get Infected are white? But that was the case with the first game as well, so...

I also only liked the first one. I bought both but never really got into the second one. I have no real explanation for my dislike as it was a well produced game and similar to the first, but the gameplay surely changed and I just couldn't groove on it. I've played about 5 hours of it and never once had fun with it. I've played the first one for 30+ hours and almost always had fun.

Did you even play Hard Rain?

I personally found the larger variety of weapons in L4D2 to be confusing, as when first playing or returning to it I can't tell the difference between some of them. I do like the larger variety of SI, though, which is part of why I liked Hard Eight so much. The large amounts of daylight contributed to making 2 feel less atmospheric (overall) to me.
