Keep in mind that, according to the plot, the survivors FIRST noticed all of the special infected about two or three minutes before the start of the No Mercy campaign.  These aren't even common parlance in the game universe.  They're just the terms that this little group of four survivors came up with two minutes ago, so they could shoot things better.
