Gabe Newell doesn't think they should be doing it this way. Thinks they should use the Team Fortress 2 Model of continuous release, rather than milk it so blatantly.

Yeah.

In any case, while I hope that the studio working behind this gets slammed for this idea and people really don't buy the game... people probably would because they're the same breed of people who pay money for a reskin of a horse for Oblivion.

You know, the same kind of people who use credit cards to pay for jacuzzis while they're still paying off a student loan and a mortgage. The kind of people who pay for the right to invest in someone else's risky mortgage, thinking it's a value purchase.

Seriously, I wouldn't be quite this distraught if the price wasn't a full game but rather, say... $10-$20. If they did that, hey, everyone will be fine.

That may be. But evil robots get distraught by horrible business decisions as well.

See, at this point, IMO Left 4 Dead 1 -was- worth the $50 when it came out.  It's worth a little less than normal Valve games due to limited support, but that's because Valve is kind of an overachiever normally.  Okay, I would like to see bugs get fixed.

And if you didn't have L4D1, then L4D2 would certainly be worth the $50 when it comes out, too.  As long as they don't ruin it (my hopes are only moderately high).

I'm predicting that L4D2 will be offered, at expansion pack prices, to people who already have L4D1 on their Steam account--and full price to people who don't.  I also predict that once L4D2 goes on sale, they'll start offering L4D1+2 for the $50 price.

Yeah...This is a case of a company that doesn't feel the Valve love.  They'll probably split off after L4D2 comes out.

But what about people who buy a box copy of L4D2 and already have L4D1 installed?

If L4D2 is offered on discount through Steam, that has to apply to box copies. The way to make it fair is to be able to get "Steam credit" or whatever. Games normally go for $50. If L4D2 is available for $25 for people who already own L4D, then give $25 worth of credit to people who install L4D2 from a box copy.

That or just give a flat "You get X game"

A bunch of similar games, not from the orange box, because everyone owns that already.

You should get Killing floor, maybe the original half life plus expansions... You know... All that good stuff.

You need to attach the boxed version to Steam for it to work at all online, don't you?

If you want your free bagel on Friday, you have to bring in the coupon.  If you want your half-price L4D2 when you already own L4D1, you have to buy it on Steam.  I don't see a problem here.

No offense, but what would make you think that?  I can't think of anything at all that would indicate they'd do something like that.

Well, their business models are really quite different apparently, and they're sucking at supporting.  Yeah there's absolutely no signs that they are going to, but I'd still be surprised if various Valve higher-ups have never said "You know, maybe you'd be happier on your own, not pissing off our customers".

Dunno...

Finally picked up Left 4 Dead over the weekend. Only got to play for about an hour yesterday, but I did the first campaign mission on...whatever the default setting is. I didn't check. So either Easy or Normal. *shrug*

Anyway, it was quite fun. And I managed to get about double the kills of any of the bots, so I don't feel I did too bad for my first run through. Got hurt a lot, though, since being constantly on point can get a bit painful. I did have fun getting tons of headshots with the assault rifle, though. This seems like a game where getting into the habit of ammo conservation is a good idea.

It's more fun if you play on Hard with friends.  (But not Expert, that's just mean.)

As for ammo conservation...well, your pistols have infinite ammo, so ammo conservation just means switching to pistols sometimes.  Sorry to burst your bubble.  I rarely actually run out of ammo playing online, which I think is a sad thing!

Having to worry about friendly fire in multiplayer is kind of neat.  Makes the incredibly useful auto-shotgun a lot more dangerous on Expert.

Playing with the bots you end up getting most kills and damage as you tend to lead away and so get the worst of what the Director can come up with. And yeah, ammo conservation is somewhat important, for example picking off stationary zombies with the pistol instead of your primary weapon will usually turn out a good decision.

I was going to resurrect this thread and link to the blog post news, but Mephansteras beat me on the first part. Sooo, check them out. Especially the latest post is interesting, apparently an update with support for custom campaigns and other neat stuff is coming this week.

We should get some DFC/Bay12 games going then, I'll even be (more) useful now that I have this fancy new computer, though I still lack a mic. Also if they get the 4v4 matchmaking in, we could see if the DFC has enough skill to crush even organized teams.
