Yet another use for nobles:

Depending on your theories of
management, supervision and advice help dwarves work better.  Under this view, some nobles take time to seek out working dwarves.  After visiting for a bit, the dwarves receive a happy bonus and, for a brief while, a skill improvement.  Guild leaders could improve things up to two steps for their members only.  Other nobles only one.  

To keep in interesting, a few dwarves resent the interference and class system and treat the visits as minor unhappy events.
