I too quite like this idea.  Even if it's as simple as an extra bit of text on the 'k' view.  A color heatmap of the whole fortress would be downright amazing.  You'd be able to see how the heat from the magma furnaces dissapates throughout the fortress, or is affected by creatures and items in the way.

Imagine what a SOF on a glacier would look like!

It would be weird if you saw a thief's heat shadow without seeing the thief himself, but other then that I like the idea.

It probally wouldn't be that detailed unless you had some sort of wizzard in your fort.

I'll fourth and fifth this idea, because it's just that awesome.

Triple points if it can be set as the normal view, for when somebody's running a Civ populated by critters with infravision.

At which point, you would make it's hair grow by ten feet.

A spell that makes a being's hair grow in, instead of out? Am I reading that right? If I am, then, ouch.

Poor Porky.  :'(

Then again, if the spell *just* made it's hair grow by 10 feet...

But back on topic:

Even if not ingame, at least some init option to see the specific heat of a tile for when we muck about with things that generate massive amounts of heat and cold, or know how much being underground will save our dwarves from freezing.

I support this as a "cheat" option, for (modding) debugging purposes.  Init would be a fine place for it.

Wouldn't this require a heat tag be placed on every creature and tile?
