I hate this trend:
List of threads:
-No !!Fluffy Wamblers!! because we're sick of it
-!!Wuffy Wamblers that spilled into a different forum section!!
-!!Fluffy Wamblers2!!
-!!Fluffy Wamblers!!
-!!Fluffy Wamblers!! *Locked*

I don't like religious arguments with people thinking they can solve questions as ancient as mankind grinding their little wits against each other on some remote and disconnected medium. I also don't like "Destroy all idea X!" as much as I hate "Destroy all not idea X!" as much as I don't like the discussions in which the people turn up. Unfortunately, I'm usually compelled to step in the middle and be trampled while trying to say what they're doing is stupid, pointless, and hypocritical because both sides are integral parts of whatever the spawning subject was (politics, economy, religion, etc).

I personally think toady should ban religious talk, since it never ends well.

I still don't get why it's seen as futile.

People form their ideas based on the ideas they're exposed to, and arguing with people can help expose them and yourself to new ideas, and help you think about your own opinions.

I've argued with more people on the internet than Derek Smart probably has, so I've seen a hell of a lot of this first-hand.

What's futile is when it's just a bitch-fest between opposing sides of people who just want to yell at each other and won't ever mention it again.

I do believe in such thing as an intelligent religous discussion. I have yet to see one on a forum, but I'm sure it's possible.

My point was, people don't seem to take atheists seriously because those that are "militant" are a tiny minority. Most of us try and keep it to ourselves. Half the people I know probably think I'm a Christian.

...Actually, I take that back. Half the people I know probably think I worship Satan.

I dislike militant atheists

I mean, sure they think they are right, and that everyone who is not an atheist is an idiot with imaginary friends

but do they have to rub it into every religious person they see ?
Try to look at it from the other side for a second.  If you dislike "militant" atheists, do you condone shoving religion down atheists on a daily basis?
I pull a dollar out of my pocket right now and it has "God" on it.
I sit down to eat at family get-togethers and am asked to bow my head and give thanks for my food.
I was asked to be "Godfather" to my nieces.
I drive down the road and I see license plates that say CUNHVN and GZUSLVS.
I was constantly told that someone is praying for me when I got sick.
The Pledge of Allegiance had "Under God" added to it in the 50s.
I pull up to an intersection and am asked to donate to a plastic bucket for ____ Church.
I'm now being asked (and I don't know how it's legal) to pay land taxes to pay for education in a Catholic School that teaches kids something I don't believe.
How many kids don't believe, but are forced by their parents into training?  (If there were a God, why do children need to be taught about God... shouldn't they "just know"?)
George Dubya would proclaim "his creator" in just about every speech he gave.
If I sneeze:  "Bless you!"
Every Christmas/Easter everyone is reminded that it was religion that the season was for no matter what it could be about (Family, sharing, catching up, relaxing)
Is it okay for a church to put up a billboard that says: "Got God?" but it's wrong for Atheists to put up a billboard?

Why should I have to hide my belief when "the other side" doesn't?

Shall I go on?

Who's being militant about religion?  I'm just trying to live my life without being preached to every time I pay for lunch.  I suggest you look to yourself and those that you consort with before telling me who is being militant.

hurr durr, they did it first, hurr durr

try to show your supremacy by dignified silence

I mean, sure thing, religion as a whole is a very negativ thing
but on a personal level, the vast majority of religious people are neither related to the crusades, nor to any modern bullshit that zealots are pulling

leave them alone

There's one thing I hate. People ask me to respect their religion when their religion does not respect me. Or they themselves do not respect my religion.

Story:

Some dumb girl (I'm not kidding. She is dumb. This is not just an insult.) started praying in the middle of the class to pass some test and that kind of disturbed me trying to study. When I asked her to shut up, pretty much the entire class called me a heathen (I'm not joking.) and an atheist. (Which I am...) The teacher told me to respect her religion. I said that this entire class does not respect my religion and beliefs nor does their religion respect me or my beliefs. The teacher sent me out of the classroom for being disruptive. Muttering something about how atheism is not a religion and thus they can insult me as much as they like.

So yeah. I hate religious people who don't think. Whenever confronted about their religion they either shake it off as a test of their faith or label me as a heretic, heathen, etc.

Wait, you were pissed off because she was praying during class? Was she praying out loud, or what?

I guess it depends on the volume level. But yeah, people can't bag you on the basis that atheism isn't a religion.

Although I refuse to post in any religious threads and normally can't get past the first page (as pttg pointed out, this is a Natheism thread) I have to say that looking through them, they go better than they do elsewhere. Searching for "does god exist" did not instill any faith in humanity on my part

Yes. Out loud. She also said something about "unbelievers" getting good grades and how that is unfair.

So yeah. That got me REALLY pissed.

I'm finishing off a Public Speaking class, and our last assignment is a persuasive speech.  Out of sixteen people, four have given speeches on why everyone needs Christ in their life to be happy.  One even devoted half her allotted time to a professionally produced video of an African Muslim having doubts about his faith, with a meandering speaking thread that boiled down to "they're doing it wrong", and that the abundance of Islam in Africa was a problem in some indefinite way.

Our first round of speeches was supposed to be informative.  Again, four were devoted to religion, but the very first one was by a Satanist.

A bit dull, if well delivered.  It was seven minutes of enumeration of the tenants of (non-prison) Satanism, which made it sound remarkably like any other Abrahamic religion.  As one would expect of course, just with a greater emphasis on personal choices.

It is a little fun, alot compelling, and I have this vain hope that I might bring a little thought into the world. But basically I realise the foolishness of being involved in it, and am seriously considering trying to kick the habit...
