[40d] Excessive game speed, even with FPS capped at 100
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:12:33 pm »

I have a PC and a laptop, both with pretty powerful processors and lots of memory to play with. On the laptop, the game runs normally. Unfortunately, it lacks a numpad, so I'd prefer to play on the PC.

The game runs impossibly fast. It takes about five minutes to complete a season even using a pre-existing colony with 40 dwarfs in it. I've tried limiting my FPS to 100, but it makes no noticeable difference. I've also tried setting the affinity to use only one cor and reducing the priority below normal. It doesn't solve the problem.

My PC is running XP SP3. Processor is an AMD dual core (can't remember the exact type). It has 2GB of memory.

How can I slow things down?

:o Damn....what the hell? Is this the first time anyone has complained that their DF is running TOO fast??

Anyways, limiting it to one core will actually speed it up. Hmm, post your init file, we'll take a look at it.

What FPS are you actually getting? (If you didn't already know, turn on your FPS counter in the init file to check it)

I find 40 fps to be preferable. (or even a little fast with agile dwarves)

Man, luckiest 'bug' ever.  You probably already do, but you might want to make sure all the weather/temp/caveins/etc. are all enabled in the init.

It is possible that time is running unusually fast. Are the dwarves zipping around?

Figuring out what FPS you're getting would definitely help.

I have pretty much the same specs you do (AMD X2 6400 2GB ram) and the dwarfs are very zippy indeed. I have 88 dwarfs stomping around and the speed faster than the start of the map on my old 3200.

Hmm, i think we've found the optimal hardware to play DF. To the store!

It would still be useful to know what your FPS counter would show. Change [FPS:NO] to [FPS:YES] and tell us what the little counter shows during play. Also, make sure you changed [FPS_CAP:xxx] not [G_FPS_CAP:xxx].

Also, if you're new and/or unaccustomed to high FPS, 100 might be too high for a FPS limit. When I started out I had the limit set on 50. Only after a month or so did I raise it to 100, since before I wasn't capable of keeping up with DF. Oh, and as a tip, make thorough use of the pause button, take your time and look around and do so often, especially when your game runs fast.

This is a weird complaint. Since, for me, this game is constantly switching between two states (paused, and waiting for the dwarves to do something so I can pause again), it would be awesome to get it so fast. I set my FPS cap to 1000 for this reason but it usually doesn't go past 200-300.

SP3, is the prob as far as i know.
It is allocating all your resources when it should not.
go to the init and set the PRIORITY to LOW.

And 1 last thing run a few apps.
(winamp, gtalk, skype, avg, .... )

I have a far more powerful pc than u. But mine works fine.
But if i remove my fps cap....

I have the opposite problem.  With 4gb of overclocked ram and a 3ghz quad-core, and no other apps running, using a 6x6 map on 40d11, my FPS drops rapidly as I get more dwarves.  By the time I have about 80-90 and about 60 uncaged animals (war dogs) my FPS is around 40-50, dropping into the 30s occasionally...and then that drops by 20-50% when I get the economy.

I now have partial print on, and weather/cave-ins/economy off in the init file, for a vain attempt to increase FPS.  Process priority is at high.  Also, framerates decrease at about the same rate on a 10x10 map (my previous standard map size), and they decrease faster on a 16x16 map.

Anyway, I figure that the dwarves are only marginally less wasteful of metal than they are of wood. The moody dwarf's selecting only the best 5% of each bar of metal, and eats the rest to sustain him as he works on the artifact.

LOLS.
Sorry,
But my FPS started slowing down for the first time. So i loaded an old save and started to compare...

Path Finding!!!!!!!

I knocked down a few walls and BOOM, 20fps gain on 116dwarves and 50-+ cats.

It seems the path finding is the largest killer...
PS. be careful of waterfalls. they eat about 2 fps each.

EDIT
{
I might be under correction.
This path finding system does not seem to be node based.
I can understand this, but it seems to be the cause of most of the lag.
There are also a lot of interesting notes when the performance is considered.
As in the slow down affect being with larger maps.
The amount of processes per dwarf suggests a lack of modular processing with the entity handling.

I hope toady fixes this design flaw and really speeds up the game.

Okay it's this or another FPS thread...

I'm running 40d on windows vista with a quad core 2.4 ghz 8 gig of ram and Nvidia 9500

Okay I know DF doesn't much use a graphics card, but it seems to produce a slight issue.

I want to run my FPS past 60. It caps at 60 and I can't get it to past. When I was running it on a diff computer running XP. It ran fast normally.

Also in the Nvidia control panel if I have Extension Limit off, DF seems to crash regularly. It gives me the error that the display driver has failed and has recovered successfully.

If I have it off as well it caps at 100.

So it's either 60 (monitor cap refresh) or 100 (not sure where the 100 cap comes from)

Any ideas how to run it at a higher FPS? maybe 200?

EDIT: I do have my FPS cap and GFPS cap set at 200
