really excighted about my first artifact
« on: April 28, 2009, 05:01:11 am »

Course, I can't figure out how to encourage the dwarf to drop it, or otherwise figure out how to look at it.

Basalt ring, that's all i know so far.

You can view your artifacts by pressing 'l'.

And I thought they always dropped the artifacts... Are you sure the dwarf is carrying it? Otherwise it has probably ended up in the appropriate stockpile.

I made a special stockpile of "rings" and a barrel went there...
I honestly don't know how to look inside the barrel

l (Lowercase L, as note to self) ... worked, silly me

This is a basalt ring.
It is encrusted with sunstone and encircled with bands of basalt.
Menaces with spikes of Basalt.

On the item is an image of...
A basalt ring, in basalt.

That's it, I'm burning this entire settlement, in fire, with magma.

I got in a fell mood and carved into the magma pipe....
the world will never know.

Honestly?  Nobody existed who could come up with a price, it was only the 2nd year (and first game of mine ever)

I got lucky with my first ever artifact  :)

A metalsmith claimed a magma forge (which i had just managed to set up, but my inexperience in management of magma led me to flood 2 z levels and destroy a massive vein of gold) :(

Anyway, he claimed the forge, grabbed some aluminum, and some iron and created a nice artifact table. It was worth 20'000 dwarf bucks, and i put it in my dining room.

Unfortunately, the game crashed and i hadn't saved, so i also lost my first ever artifact  :'(

I supose if a dwarf is unhappy or hurt they might have a miscarriage. Perhaps we could experiment a bit.

The first artifact in my current fort was a Uranium war hammer. Hooray, modding!

Granted, it's not that effective of a material in terms of damage, but it's still probably one of the heaviest artifact warhammers yet made.

Sadly, it's been six or seven years since, and no hammerdwarf has survived long enough to become a Hammer Lord. Also, the resulting legendary weaponsmith got eaten by an arcane dragon in the first winter. Damn thing nearly cost me my fort, and I had to savescum like five times before I got lucky and slayed it with a pick to the head (had so much mountain pre-designated for digging that reclaim was not an option). Might not have been possible if it arrived in a different season, didn't like the cold that much.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

...the resulting legendary weaponsmith got eaten by an arcane dragon...

I find that turning off all labors that might take my legendaries outside the safe zone is very helpful -  at least until the enemy breaks through my defenses and kills everybody in the fort.

My legendaries just haul.  They're faster than the peasants, anyway.

My first artifact was aluminum Plate Armor. Followed nearly instantly by a gabbro coffin. From then on, every other image engraved was either a coffin or a suit of plate.

I like having legendary engravers for the "Shut up, you whiny noble" effect.  And legendary armorsmiths are just too useful for words.

I had a platinum goblet as my second (after a door artifact... as if I didn't have enough of those!). It was worth ... 72,000.
It pretty much doubled the value of my fortress on the status screen.

You couldn't use the artifact door as the front door to a nobles room and have it count for room value, to please the noble, right?

Or better yet cleverly arrange it as the door between their dining, bed, office, decay rooms to improve the value of each?
