After piracy buying?
« on: April 28, 2009, 03:22:08 am »

So, I don't know if this discussion has surfaced before, so I just post my poll here.

Do you buy games you have pirated?

I personally do it when it is darrrned good ^^
Or when I'm just feeling like a landscabber.

Tell you experiences please, and why you chose which option!

thanks,

Nicolas.

I mostly pirate games that I've owned, but lost.

Other than that I use file sharing for testing runs. If I like it enough, I'll buy it.

I am never pirating games to be honest, it's simply against my principles...I am downloading the demo of the game before buying.
Sometime it's not even needed to download the demo. Example: I will surely buy these upcoming games: Majesty 2., Blood Bowl, Elemental.

I don't pirate, but if I did I'd go with this.

I'd like to argue in the direction of "I like to make my purchases at my terms, at least somewhat"
Then I have to think "but no matter how you justify it, it's illegal"

But then I just have to think how the videogame industry has started to fuck over their customers, without lube and more importantly, without respect, which isnt nice to the people that dont like degrading lubeless sex.

So I guess it's okay we fuck em back.

But... if you like a game AND that game isnt full of restrictive copy protection/spy/malware/annoying bullcrap, then, by all means PAY. Even buy 2 copies if you have to, to show your appreciation.

Self-righteous indignation is so much fun.

Me, I pirate stuff.  Why?  Because I both cheap and broke - even if I wanted to pay for stuff I could get for free, I don't have the money.  Or put more honestly, even if I had the money, I wouldn't pay for stuff.  I don't pretend to attach grandiose notions of consumer power or market forces to criminality, I just prefer the free option over the alternative.

I do of course acknowledge the dichotomy - If nobody's buying games, the only people who will be left developing games are the people willing to do it for free, and free development don't get ya Arkham Asylum.  Someday the freedom of piracy really will become the Tragedy of the Commons.  But until then, I'll spend my limited money on stuff I can't get any other way.

Remember that old piracy motto, try before buy?

Also, agreed completely about the DRM thing, the only people copy protection is going to annoy are the customers. The piracy groups see it as a challenge, they compete with each other in who can crack games faster, so better copy protection only means more street cred to whoever cracks it means more effort on part of the crackers. Totally counterproductive. And the p2p sod will just use that crack and never deal with the protection at all either. As a matter of fact I routinely crack my legit games because I refuse to juggle CDs on demand. I could understand it back in the day when harddisks were small and games actually needed to access the data on the CD, but nowadays it's all copied onto the disk anyway, so what gives? I say fuck that shit.

It has nothing to do with self-righteousness, more with like... you know, the legality of it all. Chances ARE slim, but you can always get unlucky... And you can believe me, I'm broke and cheap too. I guess that's why I don't want my "free games" to become suprisingly expensive all of a sudden.

Also, when I appreciate stuff, I like paying for it (or basically, just give something back. In the modern world, if you want to thank a stranger for their work, it is usually accomplished by money. But ffs, if you know the guys a bethesda personally, you might as well knit em a sweater for christmas. The point is, this is not only common courtesy but also quite healthy, while failing to understand that basic principle might actually point to a mental disorder  ;D).

But I detest regretting having paid for something that is badly designed or just plain broken.

In the end, I own a legally bought copy of everything I keep. Call me paranoid, if you want, but not self-righteous  ;)

Generally, I pirate stuff that is no longer available for sale, at least as far as I know. Then there's some modern stuff but my computer isn't terrific so not a lot of that. If it's from a company like stardock, that I feel really cares about their customer service and doesn't have a million and one registration hoops, then I buy it after piracy, this doesn't happen a great deal though, to be honest.

Not true. You could find the creator worthy of a 'reward' to thank him/her for the good game they made. Also, the real package is always a bit more happy-making as other stuff (though a guy under the name dopeman brings out WONDERFULL extract->play packages).
On the other hand. The packages sold nowadays are virtually worthless with sometimes not even artwork on the cd itself. There used to be manual's you know... printed.

Now you will have to pay at least 10 euro extra for the collectors edition if you wish for a (printed) manual and some neat stuff.

Maybe pirating is best after all... at least the gigantic software corporations.  :-\

Generally, I'd be broke... or at least have to pay off a few large credit card debt if I bought everything I ever got.  Or even half of it...

Either way, I know its wrong.  But, I don't care.  Just that simple.  ;)
Though, some games are deserving of being bought...  or at least borrowed/rented.  And some worthy games are not main-stream enough to be available...

Hell, DF in its current state, I'd pay for it if I know for a fact that I can't get it free elsewhere...

Higher cost and more annoying DRM = more effort I'm inclined to put in getting it free though...  Which goes to the point that I either say screw it and either buy it or the more likely option, forget about it, for the time being.  >.>  Always something else to try out in the 'now'... and it may be more 'accessible' later....

I (Mostly..) only pirate games I've lost and/or I cannot acquire without much work on my part, IE the old Monkey Island games.  ;D And then sometimes I download a game if I wouldn't pay more then 10 bucks for it. I do buy as many games as possible, however. Oh, and I did help myself to some of the Sims 2 expansions.. My wallet felt kinda empty after the 6th or 7th expansion.. But I'll buy Sims 3, thats for sure!  ;D Can't wait for that game.

As my free time has decreased, my "buy" to "try" ratio has shifted radically in favor of buying stuff.  In general, I only used to use piracy when I only had money for one game, and there were, like, ten I wanted...No matter what I did, well, I ended up owning one game.

Since then I've occasionally bought games that I previously tried, but a lot of them were awful enough that my college indiscretions, well...Let's just say some of them wouldn't have been worth even downloading again.
