 DAMMIT NO.
I SHALL BEAT YOU TO IT!

 MINE! MINE I SAY!

 GAHAHAHAHAHA!

EDIT1: I NEED MOAR PICKS!

EDIT2: After reviewing your first post, I find our strategies are far different. You plan to make a fortress inside a volcano, then make a volcano inside the fortress.

I plan on making a fortress around a volcano, then making the volcano around the fortress.
 GWAHAHAHA!

:/

part of this will not work. as previously stated, magma can't be pressurized. it will never flow upwards (except for the slow refilling of the pipe itself up to its original level).

Pumps can, and will, pressurize magma, much to my utter dismay. And hilarity. But, y'know, mostly dismay, over all.

The wiki said pumped magma pressurises. If it doesn't... I'll fix the wiki   :-\

Pumps do indeed pressurize magma; i've lost more forts to magma pumping accidents than i can count.

You guys should do what I do when people repeat old "the game works this way" "no it doesn't" "yes it does" discussions:
Post a video. http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1116-magmapressure

I also made a post a while back that might explain things in more detail. http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=32453.0
Basically "pumps pressurize magma" is a vague claim that's part true and part false depending on what you mean by "pressurize".
Magma never has the pressure rule that water does, whether pumped or not, but pumps work the same for water and magma: they decide where to put pumped fluids by finding a path through 7/7 fluids connected to the pump output to the nearest empty space on the same or lower z-level.

Ah, thank you, that thread explained a lot. It will not interfere with my plans! The magma will flow!

Kanddak: interesting. You should probably report that as a bug, since I doubt it's intended behavior.

Huh, never realized that you could make the magma move uphill after having fallen.

I figure there are three ways to do this:

  • Make the fortress go one tile below the top of the magma vent. Make an evaporation chamber lower, so the main vent doesn't go that high. Optionally, you can mine out the top of the mountain, so your tower goes above the new top.
  • Make the fortress go above the top of the magma vent, and use pumps to get it out. This would leave an unsightly pump on the top of your fort.
  • Make a separate tower to pump-pressurize the magma, and have it pipe it to the fort, where it comes out the top.

Which one are you doing?

3. Separate tower. Ugly, too, but effective.
