Why is this rock barrel so darn heavy?
« on: April 27, 2009, 04:43:40 pm »

I recently added this reaction

[REACTION:BARREL_CERAMIC]
[NAME:make ceramic barrel]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:STONE:NO_SUBTYPE:STONE:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BARREL:NO_SUBTYPE:STONE:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

It works as far as the manufacturing, but there's one slight problem.
The rock barrel produced has a base weight of 1436477r, and is slow as hell to haul.

I looked at the solid densities for various stones and metal, and found that stones were actually lighter than metal in many cases.  So why in the world is this barrel so heavy?

I think undefined stone is defaulted to that weight.

And it's a damn stone barrel.

You cannot make a product have NO_MATGLOSS and hope for something sane to come out.

[REACTION:BARREL_GLASS_GREEN]
[NAME:make green glass barrel]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:BLOCKS:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BARREL:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_GREEN:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

Worked great with glass though.

That's because there are no types of green glass beyond green glass. Green glass is itself a matgloss. Stone, on the other hand, cannot exist without a specific pointer to a matgloss.

As a side note...  does hauling super-heavy things make your haulers gain Strong stats?  as in, if I mark an anvil to be moved back and forth between two points a hundred times, will my hauler eventually become Superdwarvenly Strong?

I don't think hauling gives experience, and hence no stat increases?

Great, thanks for the tip.

I modded in a new stone layer that doesn't have any geology tags (hopefully this means it won't show up on the map.  I haven't seen any so far.)

[MATGLOSS_STONE:CERAMIC]
[NAME:ceramic][COLOR:7:7:1]

And changed the reaction to

[REACTION:BARREL_CERAMIC]
[NAME:make ceramic barrel]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:STONE:NO_SUBTYPE:STONE:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BARREL:NO_SUBTYPE:STONE:CERAMIC]
[FUEL]

Works like a charm!  WHEE!
Here I come, 50k units of booze!

I think that hauling DO give stat increase, as my dumpers get VERY strong with only running around dumping stones.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Litter drags down your framerate. Usually only noticed on truly huge fortresses with more than 50,000 stones lying about (IIRC, pitching them all into the chasm improved that user's performance by close to 10 FPS).

Wow, I've never played on a fortress that huge.
