The end of the world will occur after we run out of events to mark as the potential end of the world. Our entire planet will collapse into a singularity of boredom, from which there shall be no escape.

I'd say 4chan's influence is, in fact, fairly evident in the real world. Memes have a powerful influence on the Human mind, but in apparently subtle ways. If one managed to manufacture an artificial meme subtle enough, they could herd people into doing something slightly different. Like voting perhaps?

The end of the world will happen when the last twilight book is made. the fan rage would be so great that earth would be plunged into eternal darkness.

Given that virtually every joke you encounter these days is some variant on something from 4Chan, yeah, I'd say it's pretty influential.

But Mayans could tell future! How else could they have prepared so well for climate change?
No.  Wrong.  More recent research indicates that 2012 was the date at which the Mayans would have drawn up a new calender, along with much celebrating, including stuff like local sports and feasting.  It was not meant to be any indicator of the end of the world.

Seriously, I think the "apocalypse" that so many ancient things talk about is a purely metaphorical thing.  There's no way it could just suddenly end that we could not flee/stop/live through.

We are humans.  We are intelligent.  We are constantly learning.  One day the very universe will say "how high?" when we say "jump."  In fact, one day, the phrase "one day" will no longer have an applicable meaning to humans.  Not to say we'll necessarily abuse it (not all of us at least).

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

the word "apocalypse" itself just means events at the end of an age

Too bad the Mayan civilization didn't predict that 500 Spanish sailors would singlehandly bring their civilization to ruin. Guess they didn't see that one coming, huh?

I would not place too much faith in their ability to predict the end of the world...

Its popular with that crowd. Its also why you cannot watch a single History Channel program without stock footage of a mushroom cloud being showed.

"The popularity of fast food rose at the end of world war two, *footage of Nagisake being atomized* and one of the first fast food restaurants established..."

You could almost make a drinking game out of it. Take a shot whenever you see a mushroom cloud...
