moved due to fail - Quick artifact question
« on: April 26, 2009, 11:38:23 pm »

What, exactly, am I going to have to do to make my Legendary Miner wield my new (completely impractical) artifact deer-bone pick? Will he have to have a legendary military skill in order to pick it up?

Step 1:
Undesignate the mining skill from your desired miner. This will make him drop his current pick.
Step 2:
Forbid all picks except the one you want him to use.
Step 3:
Redesignate him as a miner. He should then go claim the desired pick.

Hope that works for you.

If memory serves, left lower corner has additional options for the original poster. At least locking, if not outright moving the thread

Step 2:
Forbid all picks except the one you want him to use...

This is most easily done thru the <z, stocks> menu, ~if~ you have adequate record keeping to see an itemized list.

Picks are listed under "weapons", so a beginning fortress might be able to see them with even "lowest" accuracy (1 significant digit, 109 weapons.)  Otherwise, more bookkeeping <n, settings> and assigning that bookkeeper a chair somewhere (the dining room?) is necessary.

(Oh - and 4 - optional - UNforbid all picks after he has the one you want him to have.)  8)

Actually, I think miners won't wield artifact picks no matter what.

Once my peons finish hauling the bazillion stones out of my stockpile and get around to dumping my miners' pick, I'll filly you in. I'd hate to be unable to use it, I thought I was going to get a useless earring or something (craft mood). And mining with a bone pick would be super.

If you're not above using utilities you could make him a champion so he'd pick up the pick as a weapon then make him not a champion so he could be a miner again.

I believe I might do that the old fashioned way, he seems averse to using it at the moment. It can sit in a weapon trap at my entrance until then and kill the skeletal deer it was made out of.

Soldiers can wield picks as weapons. I suggest going that route.

? - I thought only miners wielded picks (and they're civilians), and then only when jumped while they had one in hand.  Under the military menu there's no option for "pick" as weapon of choice.

How exactly do you designate this?

Step one : Make miner Legendary Champion Wrestler. He can now wield artifacts.
Step two : Undraft back into miner. Should pick up artifact, which can not be dropped.
Step three : ???
Step four : PROFIT!!

So yeah, normally soldiers don't ever use picks, except maybe in this very specific situation.

Y'see, that would work, except for the whole champion part.
