Practical Pipe Usage
« on: April 26, 2009, 09:29:18 pm »

I know it has been discussed in other topics but with the coming patch I figured I would bring it up again.

I would love to see pipes used for something besides screw pumps, like as a more controllable method for delivering water or magma to locations.

Certainly.   I would say that pipes have a low capacity compared to an actual open tile over water is flowing, but, pipes do not block travel (dwarves can step over them) and you can add valves to pipe sections without having to rig them to levers.

Capacity could be directly related to water pressure (How many levels above the pipe transporting the water the source is) and the strength of the pipe if it is closed. A pipe made of wood may explode if it is trying to hold back 15 Z levels of water but a steel or iron pipe should be able to handle that.

Unfortunately Toady is already busy enough with all the stuff slated for the next release that he doesn't really have time for feature requests, even good ones like this.  But yeah, it's in the dev notes, so hopefully it'll get done eventually:

Bloat316, PIPE SECTIONS, (Future): Square-filling pipes sections that you can place and walk inside and hook together over many tiles and fill with fluids and stuff.

See if you can build on ideas from these threads:

Toady's comments on the implementation of pipes:
I've laid some of the...  pipe... for pipes...  pipe.  But there's some trickiness.  Ideally, you'd be able to walk on a pipe, walk in a pipe, not see through a pipe, not be able to walk through the walls of a pipe, flow things and freeze things and obsidian stuffs in a pipe, and make interesting T and 5 and 6 and 4 directionally and corner pipe sections and lay them out however.  I'll do it at some point.
