Unique resources (luxuries, at least)? I don't think the ocean per se actually does anything to hurt you anyhow; at worst you're down a couple points of wood for fishing villages vs. irrigating basic plains.

Does "animation theory"  do anything practical (liiiiike... automated labor? ), or would finding actual uses require further research?

How do the Fire Flowers work?

The ember roses don't do anything yet, but once you finish up Fire Alchemy you'll be able to use them to make fire-related stuff.
