Yes, please listen to Glacial here.

Nope, sorry, I don't believe the idea that talking about religion is "pointless" because it's not. Religious belief has changed over time and still will, and I think that claiming some sort of moral high-ground by being apathetic about it is misguided.

I care to argue religion, personally, because I know (and it is constantly proven, in my life and others) that people are in fact influenced by what other people have to say and the examples they set, and because religion, for better or for worse, is an important part of our culture.

I like to argue about religion just to practice my debate skills. And they help in practicing research skills too, as well as the ability to turn neutral/unreliable statistics into something that supports your point. It's nice to discuss it, pointless to point out whose is wrong.

I believe in nothing. My logical is irrefutable. Your facts and spun words are nothing! Everything is nothing.

Yet everything is everything and nothing at once. And if you believe everything is nothing, then that's a belief, no? And there is no meaning to everything except what you decide it to be, but if you believe it's nothing then it will be nothing to you. And then nothing WILL be everything because everything that existed, will exist, or is existing will be nothing yet everything simultaneously. So everything would be meaningless and thus be nothing but would be in a state of form where it would be everything, thus compounding the situation further. Conversely, nothing would thus be everything as a result of synonymous descriptors and thus nothing would be everything. Therefore the whole point of nihilism is that there is no difference between it and normal thinking about nothing and everything.

*cough*

There, that about settles it.

These threads say otherwise.

I'm going to have to agree with G-Flex here. There is just so much wrong about what Glacial said. Anyone who claims that debating Religion or being an "angry Atheist" doesn't change anything, has a serious lack of observation powers or hasn't noticed the distinct lack of people burning in stakes outside their windows. (by the way, while religions try to push their beliefs into others, atheist push BACK. and get attacked for it, because the only real way to push BACK is to push HARDER than the first person doing the shoving. But then everyone attacks atheists for not standing perfectly still, if they don't want to get shoved, instead of pushing back).

I don't see Hindus pushing back too hard*. Or Buddhists. Or Shinto. It's really just a massive tug of war between Christians and Atheists.

*in America. As far as I can tell Europe either.

[rant]More like an all out war between all of the evangelical cults in which civilian casualties, more than just being fun, are kind of the whole point...

Yes, Atheism, Agnosticism, and Apathy can be cults, along with ANY other religion if people worship them...

Christianity pushes very hard and kills alot of civilians, it isn't the fact that the crusades happened but the casual brutality that they had. And just look at what happened in America, both continents. Any time you allow your own morality to become less important than something else you lose it! I don't much care for a world in which morality is determined by a poorly translated book that specifically refuses to prove its own validity...[/rant]

It's fine in the Philippines. Atheists, Muslims, and Christians all get along.

Our Islamic terrorists want independence, not jihad. They're perfectly fine on religious grounds.

Ehh they are pushing eachother.

Though that is why I don't really put athiesm into one category and consider it finished (It would be like saying all Christians are Catholic). Especially since there are a few different types of Athiests out there as well as many philosophies put under it. Though there are quite a few Athiest Religions out there as well (I can only name two).

Though I kinda wish people would stop treating Atheism as "Anti-Religion" in almost all ways... Since it just creates a weird double standard where Religion is evil and Atheism can do no wrong simply because you cannot act under Atheism. (Not blaming anyone here, I havn't read this thread). Though I don't really blame belief systems for anything, just the people (Don't blame the kettle for the water put into it)

I am more anti-faith than anti-religion, I don't mind if someone believes something, but if they are willing to compromise themselves and/or others for something that they respect too much to evaluate then there will obviously be trouble. When people apply this to something that specifically refuses to be verified it is just silly, at least when people were worshipping Stalin there was a body of evidence that they could consult and a quantity of very real power that they were right to respect...

Religion is destructive and dangerous, but there are many other things that have the same effect...
