Well, maybe there is a million idiots, or two million rednecks or three million KKK admirers, but America has a lot of people and that's not even close to the majority. That's what I'm saying, that usually extremists skew the view of others when the truth's not like that at all. It's both side's fault, because extremists are dicks and people who assume they're the face of a particular group or denomination need to fact-check, but as far as picking something to hate on goes, I'm going to hate on extremists more.

I'm going to hate on extremists more.
Only because a few of them are ruining it for the rest.
There's some very civil and nice extremists out there, if you'd just care to look.

It's
"A supernatural being, who is worshipped as the controller of some part of the universe or some aspect of life in the world or is the personification of some force"
This is not "God" in any remote sense of the word.  Heck, I could define "God" as a chair, and say I'm sitting on him now.

Besides, he's got exactly the same probatio diabolica as the traditional image of God, and there's still no point in praying to him.  Again, it doesn't matter whether he exists or not.

Both are definitions (amongst more). The boy I just imagined is also the creator of the universe, so should fall within the definition. There's a limit to how far you can twist "being rational", you're losing it.
This adds nothing to the debate except another petty insult.

You did not rtfa, did you? And if you did, go bug the author.
Well, what were you trying to say?

Strange arguments... That does not mean he was not a jerk. On the other hand, he was a good friend of Douglas Adams, so he must have some redeeming quality :)
It was his influence that actually converted Adams to atheism, interestingly.

Hateing extremeists is all well and good, but I like my way more.
I hate EVERYONE equally, unless I know a person personilly and know for a fact they aren't an asshole, I put them under 'hate' file.

See, I somehow knew you'd say that but by definition there isn't, not with the type of extremist I'm talking about. It's like looking at a hundred, pure evil men (not that I think extremists are) and saying "yeah, well, some of them are actually pretty good guys if you care to look into it." They can't be, by definition.

*sigh* Allright, sorry, I got my definitions from the dictionary. If we're going to use your personal definitions of "god", that's fine, but please specify them so there's no gap in the communication.

Nothing, I thought it was an interesting and on-topic link, and quoted the juiciest part from the article. As I will do again at the bottom of this post.

That one goes into the interesting trivia box, thanks :)

So, what do you do as an atheist, when people start praying for you?

Ignore them because they can not effect you either way?

I'd tell them to stop because it'd be morally wrong not to and also a dickmove.

Misread the question. I'd be flattered that people are doing what they think is the best thing they can do to help me, even if I don't believe it'll help. If people were praying to me, I'd have to be a grade-a asshole not to tell them to stop and this goes for pretty much everyone.

It's rhetorical, and clickable.

I always think it kinda sad when a new person comes into the thread.

Whatever you're bringing to this thread, especially if it's the generic 'Can't prove he does!' or 'Can't prove he doesn't!', it's been said before and I'm not absolutely sure what the actual topic is now. Catch up.

Tell them to stop. I suppose that it's possible that their praying could be out of a desire to genuinely help me and not to take a self-rightous holier than thou attitude at the situation, I have yet to have ever encountered this for myself. Granted, I haven't really actually encountered this type of situation myself, but the general attitude of the faithful praying for atheists always seems to be this.

Also:

That is the perfect responce.

I have in, I think, good faith and with the honest intention of helping when I felt powerless to do so, prayed for people dying that I don't think were actually religious. It happens, I'm sure.

How do you stand the internet then?  This is pretty much how I feel as well and I can't stand people on the internet, in most all places but especially on MMOs.  I just not competitive and it seems like that is what everyone is out to do... compete, win, etc.

Not to mention it is nearly impossible to judge the character of someone through anything they do on the internet.
