Well, I did Latin before starting German, so I was able to get my head round the cases.

Unfortunately, the cases are different in German (although there is some overlap).

Whereas with English, the only thing you really have to remember about a word is the meaning.

Oh yes, so right. I never really learned english grammar.. I just read english books and frequent english sites.

So i constantly get the best grades in english, without learning, while others learn for three hours a day, for months, and are worse than me.

Though sometimes i do face problems. Like, i can`t handle commas in english at all.

Just read my posts and you'll soon learn to use them far too often!

Ironically you could've easily placed a comma in there  ;D

Like:
"Just read my posts, and you'll soon learn to use them far too often!"
Or would that be incorrect?

Incorrect, ands don't get commas.*

*There are exceptions, of course, but mostly in lists and such.

Commas before the word 'and' are generally thought to be unnecessary in most situations.

Edit: BigJake beat me.

Funny. You don`t place commas before "und" (The german and) either.

Hey, if you speak one language you speak them all!

Especially if two of the languages are German and English.  You'd be hard pressed to find two more similar outside the romance languages.

Well most European languages DID come from latin, it makes sense that some things are shared between them.

Well, yes.  Just trying to make the point that English and German also used to be the same language.

You can... it's not incorrect, it just looks weird if you do it too often.

In regards to German, I, having learned the words ja, nein, danke and entschuldigen sie a few years ago, I actually use them by habit instead of the English term, and I find it really difficult not to. Anyone else have this problem? I don't even learn German and I do it, just because they sound so much better than the English terms.

It's not incorrect to start a sentence with and, either.  Still can't bring myself to do it. :)

Yes, but i have that problem with english. I seem unable to curse in german anymore because english curses somewhat sound better.

And i love curses. I often try to create new, funny ones. My current favorite is "Dschingis khan burning down my village!

/Edit can`t spell for shit.
