All we need is drugs and violence, and this topic can just be called Americans.

Ohh well, now Ill have to try harder not to check back in here.

Once again, my offer of coming over to hang out with the cool, non-committal kids who don't get into arguments like this (anymore) still stands. We do have cookies!

Guh. I'm pulling out of this before it goes into politics and I explode.

Can I have cookies?

We have made by humans, caused by the random occurrence of life or the body of Christ. Oh, and they come in chocolate, raspberry or vanilla.

I'll take the vanilla ones, thanks. Never was too keen on raspberry.

I admit that I lack sufficient experience of military organisations to make such assumptions without being insulting. But bear in mind that if an authority has made a decision then it is can be assumed that they have already considered the circumstances. If a soldier refuses to destroy a target with innocent hostages in it then they had better have a very good reason...
The innocent civilians were reported to be carrying bombs, this time it was bad intelligence, the last couple of times it saved dozens more innocent civilians and considerable property damage.
You don't have the food to feed the POWs, if you do nothing, they starve to death and so do your soldiers, if you release them, they go back to your enemies, looting on the way, and then start killing your soldiers, or they starve to death and you are still guilty of war crimes. Someone with authority made the decision, a soldier isn't in a position to know the whole situation, they should follow orders unless they have reason to believe that someone has made a mistake.
This sounds like an argument FOR religion, in the context of everything else you're saying, which seems to be AGAINST religion.

The religion could be used to give the same orders...

I do not understand how that has anything to do with anything. You said:

"Excessive loyalty is bad, but I believe it is a quality all soldiers should have"

Also, the average person who believes in say, Catholicism (the only religion I can think of that has a single human leader), has this little whisper in the back of their mind: "Killing is wrong". That and they're not trained to kill. They don't have the mindset or the means to be given those orders and carry through with them, unless the Pope had just given a particularly frenzying speech and used the ensuing mob mentality to charge forth, with his army of Catholics, from the Vatican and begin killing... homosexuals? atheists? jews?
I dunno who he'd want to kill but whatever.

Reductio ad absurdum:
4chan COULD begin fundraising and sending volunteers over to Africa to help the third world countries become democratic nations and industrialize.

Be this thread the Flying Dutchman?  No matter how lost the path, can it never take it's rest?

I don't particularly value the fact that the world has effective soldiers in it. Having an imbalance of soldiers is almost certainly worse, but if we managed a world without excessive obedience we might find soldiers to be impractical...

I have my own PR men, thank you.

Plus, we have no ginger. Sorry, we hate ginger. By which I mean I hate ginger.

Semantics. Master has an entirely different connotation than boss, depending on how it's used. There is an emotional undercurrent.
Master is an entirely acceptable term for people in modern times. To address someone as your master is somewhat exceptional, but does occur outside of slavery and similar circumstances. Master implies responsibility and boss implies dictation, but you should not allow one without the other. The thing is that god demands absolute loyalty, absolute loyalty cannot co-exist with other loyalties without one or the other being compromised.

Master also implies teaching, as in a master-apprentice relationship.

Its really funny, reading the first post, then coming 77 pages to the latest one and reading it. Why does this happen?  I thought this was a discussion about atheism, not 4chan raising funds to go spray porn over africa.
