I feel quite safe in my isolated northern region of an insignificant island state a few hundred kilometres south of the Australian mainland, so I will call hysteria on the media blitz concerning the flu. It might be serious but almost assuredly it isn't "The big one", as SBS news (Normally a rather hype-free news source) called it. Go go modern medicine and modern society's ability to support (a majority of) people who need immediate help!

Hahah, are you saying you feel quite safe in New Zealand? Sixty seven possible cases. Another day or so to confirm At least ten confirmed cases in Aukland North Shore with several other possible cases.

If you mean some other insignificant island nation of of Aussielands coast, I can't think of one.

Edit: Two people dead as far north as Tijuana, a stones throw from the California border. Is it's deadliness spreading radially from it's initial source? Have cases beyond the Mexican Shore just not incubated long enough for it to kill?

You know what the sad part is? All the antivaccinationists are going to fight tooth and nail against letting anybody be vaccinated for this, when they do discover a vaccine, and people are going to die as a result.

All because vaccinations somehow cause autism and Asperger's syndrome. Which apparently is life destroying and crippling. (It's not.)

Russia is a biiiiiiiiig country. I doubt it could spread to quickly there.

Yeah. People die because of other people's stupid delusions all the time. I hope this causes a serious backlash against the Anti-vaxers.

Nooo, not Russia :( That's where I keep all my priceless intangible sentimental stuff.

Dammit, other half of the world. You were fine just yesterday.

But then again, Moscow and the surrounding region is pretty densely populated. It doesn't need to spread to Siberia to make a lot of casualties anyway, as the only really large cities like Vladivostok are hundreds and hundreds of mile away. Moscow would be the ideal place for the flu to spread over all of Eastern Europe!

Yeah, me too. I wanted to vomit when I found out Jim Carrey was an antivaxer. :(

Anyway... here's hoping our DFers stay uncontaminated.

My wife got sick today. It's flu like, but not all the symptoms described for swine flu. We are in Virginia, and there are no cases anywhere near us, but I don't think that means anything.

Went to the doctors this afternoon. She tested negative for the regular flu, so they are testing for the swine flu.

Edit: Results take about 3 days to come back.

Also live in Texas. Down here in Bass Ackwards Seguin. They haven't shut down the high school, possibly because of TAKS testing.

Yep, TAKS > any damn disaster for our schools.

This flu certainly won't kill us all. But given the mexican mortality rate, roughly 6%. you will probably know somebody who will die if this truly becomes a pandemic.

My wife's great grandfather died in the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak, and he was a young man.

You also have to take into consideration the quality of healthcare in some parts of Mexico plus the fact that people might just mistake it for the regular flu as to why so many have died/gotten infected.
