Bows > Everything?
« on: April 26, 2009, 10:31:26 am »

Sorry but i need to release some of my rage here.

I've recently played in adventure mode, i was killing an entire town ( Like you do when you're bored, i do it all the time ) i had a set of ( Modded ) Dragonsteel platemail masterpiece quality. Which is roughly fourteen times better than iron, i slaughtered endless guards with my Ξ<<ΞIron MaulΞ>>Ξ, even the spearmaster never stood a chance. Suddenly, one unskilled archer comes from nowhere. BAM. Upper Body run through! I've been struck down.

This is a great example of just how over powered range is, one arrow. Just ONE, arrow. And i'm dead. Yet i killed a freaking DRAGON. I guess what i'm trying to say is, is there any effective method what so ever with dealing with archers? ( Except the "Prone Strategy" it always ends with you being a pin cushion or getting raped by melee guards )

...why's this in the Dwarf Mode forum when it's about an incident in Adventure Mode? Wrong forum, buddeh.

Anyway, yes, ranged weapons are known to be overpowered because multiple arrows/bolts can be fired in very quick succession, and piercing damage from arrows/bolts can easily result in one lucky shot skewering a vital organ. That in combination with the fact that they're ranged weapons (so archers can attack melee opponents without risk of being attacked themselves) means that archers can be the most dangerous opponents in the game. As you're in adventure mode, build up throwing skill and throw random crap at them. Killing an elf by throwing a glob of vomit at them is about as funny as death by teacup.

In Fortress mode, a military consisting mostly/entirely of marksdwarves will be extremely powerful.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

There's a very common workaround that involves modding. Just find the x-bows/bows in your raws and edit them so they do blunt damage instead of piercing. You can reduce the damage too, if you feel like it. The big advantage of it is that it's not cheating, since it also very much cripples your own ranged effectiveness, too.

+1.  You'll get better answers by moving this where it belongs.

Adventure mode doesn't work the same on all levels as Fortress mode.

Blunt damage makes them more ubiquitous. Blizzard man? Never fear, the power of crossbows can kill him!

My bad, forgot to write about the fortress mode incident as well. One dwarf, full adamantine. One bolt. Unconcious. Bled to death. 'Nuff said.

just reduce the power of bolts/arrows to 20 or 30 damage in the raws. This makes it highly unlikely that you'll die from a single bolt, and animals generally die from the buildup of multiple wounds rather than a single lucky hit.

I think the main problem is arrows shoot way too fast, and they ignore armor too much.

Just have loads of blind corners in your entranceway, or a maze for the poor marksgobbos to be hunted in by your legendaries...

This is actually accurate for crossbows. That's what made them so hated by everyone with knights on their side. An unskilled peasant trained for a while can utterly destroy a knight in full plate mail trained from a young age with a single shot.

Where DF is inaccurate is the ridiculous firing rate. Destroying so many organs with one shot is also inaccurate, but as a single hit is, realistically, pretty much death it doesn't matter so much.
