Hey! Have already buried several characters there. My question is why my doesn't pet follow me on the way to the lower floors? It always hangs around until level 3 or so, then just disappears.

Pets will 'only' follow you up/down if they're standing next to you when you take the stairs.

As with everything else in Nethack, there are corner cases.

Pets will follow you if they're standing next to other pets which are already positioned to follow you.

Paralyzed and stoned pets will not follow you, regardless.  I think that naturally immobile pets won't follow you either.

I don't remember the rules for pets which have other status ailments like confusion, hallucination, or conflict.

I don't remember the rule for long worms -- if it's any body part or just the head.  Anyone know?

Hey everybody how do I make NetHack (or SLASH'EM) look like this http://slashem.sourceforge.net/3ddrag.png or at least this http://slashem.sourceforge.net/32tour.png ? I just can't stand the tiles provided as default. I run the game under Win 7 x64.

I'm an ASCII man at heart, but I am aware of Vulture. Not sure if it's exactly what you're looking for, but it's something.

Anyone with a Mac ever tried Nethack3D ?
http://www.sbrain.org/nethack3d/

This Dungeon Master-like presentation looks interesting , i wonder how it "feels" to play a DM with the Nethack ruleset and overall insanity.

I wish there was a version of Nethack that would implement the user friendly UI of Falcon Eye/Vulture Eye but without forcing the player to suffer from that bad angled isometric view they choose for the display, always annoyed me when that bad angle is making it so walls, even lowered ones, can make things unclear when they're not just hiding part of the view.

That would be nice.

What I'd want is friendly UI, freely orientable 3D, mouse-based orient/zoom probably keyed off the RMB and wheel (or MMB and wheel), with LMB for interfacing with the core game.

And the kicker: I want it in ASCII.

That was the best feature of Falcon Eye to me, that mouse based interface (but still able to use key shortcut at will)

roguelikes have progressed a lot regarding interface, you have ADoM , DCSS , ToME4, BRogue by example that have improved a lot and have mouse support too while features both good ASCII and graphic display.

Discovered there's a browser version of nethack, it's using quite a nice tileset
http://coolwanglu.github.io/BrowserHack/

edit : it has actually a lot of tilesets, you can switch on the fly, and some smooth zooming too

No-no-no I don't want any of those (they all are exactly as terrible as the default tiles), I want the ones which are in the pictures. And the pictures were got from the SLASH'em official site. Anybody knows where one can download those tiles from?

Hey could someone construe what happened?

I found a hostile kitten in the zoo on the last floor of Sokoban. I was glad to have taken several tripe rations when solving one of the Sokoban's puzzles so I threw one at the kitten and tamed it.

Having escaped Sokoban, I came down on the 9th floor. I noticed a naga not too far away from me and made several steps towards her. As soon as I trod on a tile adjacent to that occupied by the naga, it suddenly turned barbed devil which made things far way worse for me (as I looked up on the wiki). I attempted running away and thankfully succeeded.

Catching my breath, I decided to get the devil with a sleep wand (I didn't know whether it even might work out, but it was the only chance as it seemed to me back then) and returned to that room. Though to my surprise, a stone giant stood before me, not the devil. What? I departed again and got waiting for his coming over himself. I waited for some turns but no stone giant appeared. Strange. I decided to get closer for another time. And instead of the giant there I saw a tamed (!) hell hound. Great enough I thought, and let it go along with me. I have two pets now and one of them is a hell hound with fire breath, cool. And where is my kitten, by the way?

I had not made several steps when got surrounded by a soldier ant and some freaking baboon. So I got engaged in close combat, and as it proved a few turns after, just to get screwed. As my hp decreased to less than 25%, I realized that it's going to be all over if I continued persisting in melee struggle. Too bad I hadn't any powerful magical items or ranged weapon either (there was also too little space for performing a manuever to slip away). The only thing that could help was praying, though my God wasn't much willing to heal me out (I suppose because my hp still remained above 1/7). I was about to die when my new friend spew out a squirt of fire at them, literally saving my life, and the foes laid struck down on the floor. Then I recovered from the prompts that I hadn't been getting any hit within the period of time before I was saved (the praying proved partly successful?), though they two might have performed many swings at me so that I would probably have died, thus it was just a miracle I survived that fight.

And only then it ocurred to me that my hell hound might actually be my former kitten, by some ridiculous case polymorphed into a hell hound. How could that happen?

Well, polymorph traps can hit pets to transform pets, and IIRC it's actually a good way to get an overpowered pet early on if you're lucky. If you're UNlucky, then it's a fast method of killing your pet.

Certain intelligent enemies, like gnomes, can pick up any wands they find and use them, so it's possible one found a wand of polymorph and used it on your pet.

And while I can't remember if it's actually possible, you might have accidentally tamed a shapeshifter, a rare monster that polymorphs by itself random, but I think you'd have noticed it right away because it'd be shapeshifting all over the place.

IIRC vanilla nethack you can tame shapeshifters if they manage to turn into a form tameable (cats, dogs, horses).

Theyre also immune to charm monster, if i recall properly.

I noticed that my hell hound picks up gold. Is it normal? What may it be out of?

All pets pick up gold provided they can carry it. A pet picks up items so long as its apport is high and it isn't Cursed BUC (Blessed for Undead such as Ghouls).
