Nope, not worth the frustration. And it virtualy never happens, its probably one of the least lethal trap types in the game.

I may be overreacting about doors, but just wait until you open the trapped chest that paralyzes you, and then get stabbed 20 times by a goddamn Elf as you stand there completely helpless, and you'll be paranoid too.

Rogues have a better chance of untrapping chests, I heard.

Worse things happen, you were just unlucky that time(even by nethack standards). I've been insta-killed by chest poison before. Its really no big deal.

Anyway all this talk has moistened my appitite for nethack, I havent played in a while but it will probably do me some good...

Don't get me wrong. I didn't say the number. I said the rate. Even on this thread alone, how many people here have actually beaten the game or gotten anywhere near the end?

Yeah, I know that sounded very elitist but it's true. If you disregard such basic and simple ways to avoiding such obvious risks, then there's no way in hell you can possibly play Nethack properly.

Untrapping doesn't always work though, especially when your Dex isn't very high. I usually just untrap a locked door/chest once, then I'll unlock/bash it open.

Deeper in the mines, I'll search twice before every move into new tiles if I have the food from Sokoban... otherwise I'll just try my luck with just once or none at all. With Excalibur I move without search.

Obvious risks? An obvious risk would be wearing random armour you picked up off the ground, or punching a floating eye, or attacking a unicorn when your a rouge that has only 7 st.

This is way more obscure, Ive only died once from it. And thats out of about 500 deaths.

I didn't know you could wear make-up in nethack, let alone make-up with stats.
