Ah, thanks, so I have a -4 to my penalty or something?

That's not a penalty... that's a reduction to penalty.

I'll post the table again...

Role     Stat     Base     Body armor     Shield     Emergency     Special
Archeologist    Int    5    10    2    0    magic mapping    -4
Barbarian    Int    14    8    0    0    haste self    -4
Caveman    Int    12    8    1    0    dig    -4
Healer    Wis    3    10    2    -3    cure sickness    -4
Knight    Wis    8    9    0    -2    turn undead    -4
Monk    Wis    8    20    2    -2    restore ability    -4
Priest    Wis    3    10    2    -2    remove curse    -4
Rogue    Int    8    9    1    0    detect treasure    -4
Ranger    Int    9    10    1    2    invisibility    -4
Samurai    Int    10    8    0    0    clairvoyance    -4
Tourist    Int    5    10    2    1    charm monster    -4
Valkyrie    Wis    10    9    0    -2    cone of cold    -4
Wizard    Int    1    10    3    0    magic missile    -4

Wizard has a base penalty of 1, comparing this to the other classes, it means wizard is the best spellcaster of them all. When wearing armor or shield they all get penalized. If the spell's a emergency spell or the class's special spell, they get a reduction to the penalty.

Can I name my pet something so I don't keep getting "little dog"?

Use the [C]all command. You can use it to name monsters too, e.g. to identify that deadly soldier wielding a cockatrice corpse.

I've heard that in explore mode you get a wand of wishing.  I've tried explore mode before, but never got a wand of wishing.  To make sure I haven't confused it with something else (which I may have), I hit shift+X to go into explore mode.

I just had a samurai lucky enough to find Dragonbane on the second floor.  But you know what?  I die somehow.  Cruisin' along just fine, kicking a with my artifact weapon, next thing I know I'm low on health.  A dwarf tries to kill me, I kill him, try to loot his stuff, and then a gnome lord starts chasing me and kills my pet.  I run, and keep getting hit by bolts.  I die before I can do anything else.

You have to start the game with "-X" option, and start a new character to get the wand of wishing.

All of the bane weapons are weak... these randomly generated or bone level artifacts are just obstacles to wishing for the one you really want.

Oh hey! I just found out that praying restores lost stats, or at the very least, intelligence lost from a mind flayer attack. the Wiki never mentioned that.

I'll have to keep that in mind, it'll come in handy.

ONLY IF YOUR VERY PIOUS. Remember that, otherwise thats a prayer wasted. :)

The best bet with mindflayers is a hat and unicorn horn just in case.

I'd say the best bet with mindflayers is a blessed scroll of genocide. 2 uncursed scroll of genocide if you're a dwarf. :)

Those dont show up that often, unicorn horns are almost guaranteed, and any idiot can find a hat.

Um.  How do I do the latter and the prior without exiting?

If you enable wizard(cheat) mode you can wish for items without using the wand,

You can also wish for more wands of wishing either way in wizard mode.

Wizard mode is too powerful for playing though... you can wish for almost anything, you can teleport between levels at will and a lot of other commands.

You can also wish for about 30 dwarf figurines and make a dwarf fortress in the dungeon. Fill some boxes with food and barrels of booze and you're golden. Finally a use for all of those canned former pets!

Yes, I am aware of the fact that monsters do not actually seem to need to eat. They don't, right?

That'd be crazy. Food hoarding would be a vital part of the game if they did.

Sokoban is officially the bane of my existance. I messed up one block, and it takes 4 charges from a wand of striking, an an earth scroll, and a lot of swearing to get through that level.

I'm getting into this bad habit of starting a new character every day, and then that character becomes so awesome that I forget about all my other awesome characters. Today is a valkyrie.

Today is a valkyrie.

Which would be an awesome name for a nordic metal song.
