I just managed to reach mine town for the second time as a samurai.  The altar is co-aligned  ;D

Things are probably about to go horribly wrong . . .

Argh . . . I was ready to go to the next dungeon level, when I run into a vortex.  It engulfs and blinds me.  I kill it.  I forget that I am still blind.  I get the message "wait!  There's something there you can't see!  It gets angry!"  I run.  Once not blind, it turns out to be a watchman.  I am forced to kill it and make a dash for the exit.  I succeed.  Next level down, I run into a swarm of giant bees.  I survive it.  Then I run into a soldier ant and attack it . . . and then more show up.  I die.

Any good way to get a spell area up? And is there a hardcap on how many schools of magic you can raise?

The only way to get skill points is to use the skill a lot. From Wikihack:

Skill Level    Successful Uses
Unskilled    0
Basic    20
Skilled    80
Expert    180
Master    320
Grand Master    500

Hitting a monster for more than one point of damage counts as a successful use of a weapon skill, bare-handed combat or martial arts. Riding continuously for 100 turns counts as a successful use of the riding skill. Successfully casting a level n spell counts as n successful uses of the relevant spell casting skill.

There is a hardcap on how many skill points you can get - it's related to your character class.

Ah, Nethack.

My best run? A 9,000 pointer who died on the seventh floor. An Elf Ranger.
Named Legolamb.

Special Moments with Nethack:

This was soon followed by the line: Time stands still while you and the Dwarf Lord lie in each other's arms...

i think someone crunched the numbers and determined that sink kicking and fountain quaffing were statistically unworthwhile, unless you were in one of a few very special case scenarios.

that said, i could never resist the urge...

In the case above, the sink yielded an uncursed +4 Ring of Adornment, a +1 Constitution boost, a level (killing the Energy Vortex/Raccoon Puppet that slept with me), and a few rather hillarious/awesome facepalm moments.

Elf . . . Named Lego . . .
What have you done.  You named an elf Lego.

That's like mixing matter and antimatter.

No.  It is bad.  Bad, bad, bad.

Antimatter makes matter go boom.

LEGOs are awesome.  Elves are like LEGO's polar opposite.
