(s)earch, =searching, elf, Excalibur, (stethescope, kicking, spells, /secret door detection, what else?

All of which is not guarenteed anyhow depending on your class and race.

Nethack's worst flaw in my mind is being "Secret Pathwayed to death" and the next is "Spoiler/exploit-based gameplay"

Hurray!

Will hitting a fountain with a pickaxe make pools?

Usually but not always.  The good thing about doing that is that fountain effects do not happen.

Because seriously; anyone without a pickaxe in Nethack is dead anyway, because of all those bullshit secret doors and walls that seem to take up about half of the surface of most levels.

(s)earch, =searching, elf, Excalibur, (stethescope, kicking, spells, /secret door detection, what else?

I *think* seeing a monster coming out that way will reveal it for you...

Not only is this a no. But they can attack you from within a secret halway and escape into it while your watching.

I've finished Nethack only once... And I've played it alot. The initial part of the game is the best but it just starts repeating itself too much in the end, IMHO. At least if you level yourself alot over 14  ::)

I kind of lost interest when I ruined my best game ever (human tourist 99% sure to ascend) -> accidentally deleted my saved game  >:(

It does.  You might try Slash'EM.  One of the goals was to make late-game more interesting.

Note that Slash'EM is less balanced, and has exploits.

Note that Slash'EM is less balanced, and has exploits.

Which means that it's the FUN version.

Less balanced + exploits = fun.

Nethack is a challenge and it's possible to play competitively, or at least feel like you've EARNED your spot on the high scores list.  Slash'EM is like joining a TF2 server with low gravity and all critical hits:  A total blast, if somewhat less fulfilling.

I really think you're the only person I've ever met with this problem.

PM me with a reminder or something this weekend, and I will try and compile you a version with no secret doors.  What platform?

Wait, people die because of secret doors? That's news to me.

I've never died due to secret doors. So long as you make good assessments of your surroundings, and apply the (s)earch button liberally, you can get out of those scenarios.

I've died searching at the exact spot a secret Door/Hallway is.

I don't know why I am apperantly the only one who consistantly gets secret hallwayed to death.

Though remember I can't tell the difference between Nethack or ADOM

A pickaxe will solve pretty much any secret door/pathway problem, seeing as how they can be gotten very early, you can just forge your own path!

Now, I'm playing another neutral monk, and I have the problem that one dungeon level is SWAMPED with monsters. They pour in from every side, and I can't get through. If I dig right through the floor, then I get the problem of being boxed in if I have to retreat upwards.

Alright, I solved my problem by retreating, and going down the gnomish mines instead. This turned out to be the right choice as I beefed up by punching gnomes to death and eventually got the luckstone.

Also, I found out that the Looking glass (aka, the mirror) is an INCREDIBLY useful tool. Apply it towards a direction to scare any non-humanoid, non-unicorn monster that has eyes, and it acts like an portable Elbereth. Great against things like Ants, snakes, Mumaks, any dog, any feline, ponies, and while I'm not at that point in the game yet, I presume also dragons. Just make sure your mirror isn't cursed, cause then it has a 50% chance of not working.

I'm just a little over turn 12,000 on neutral human monk, in the middle of doing Sokoban. I might stick with this one, just to see how it goes.

Its happened to me ONCE, I was playing a barbarian and on the second level I searched around a room for tons of turns. There was no other way to continue and no food, so I eventualy starved.

But of course that was only once.
