I have an alligator wandering carelessly around on my new map too, and I'm not sure whether I should leave him alone or cut him down before he becomes a problem.  Oh well, at least the odd red mark that follows him around the map lets me keep track of him.

Landing blind (that is, not embarking, then re-embarking with custom tweaks from a saved file), I bring 4 regular dogs and train them up - it's absurdly fast even for a Novice Animal Trainer, and for the savings well worth it.

I'm not sure if two regular dogs are worth more or less than a wardog in a fight, but I know they're worth more for breeding down the line.  And once they're trained, twice the escort power.

 For me, it's a good bet.

I decided to mobilise my "army" of 4 elite wrestlers, and ordered them to the alligator.  The alligator seem scared, and kept ducking in and out of the water.  Then three of my wrestlers decided to bugger off and leave the other one on her own.  Of course, then the alligator decided to strike.  After a long fight, which left several random (but very minor) injuries on my elite wrestler, the alligator was slain.

But now I have a problem: the 3 wrestlers who left are now champions, but the one who bravely killed the alligator is still just an elite wrestler.  Why isn't she upgrading?

not sure whether I should leave him alone or cut him down before he becomes a problem. 

Well, problem solved, but not the way most would recommend.

Alligators are not as bad as cave crocodiles (!), but still something to be taken care of with ranged weapons.

Critters in DF are not (completely) stupid, and will rarely charge to their certain deaths.

Make sure you haul that carcass in - 'gators are a x4 value animal.

Ah.  Mystery solved.  All of her wounds have healed except a "lower spine" injury (it's now brown-ish).  Should recover in a little while, she's still walking around just fine.

On a slightly unrelated note, my possesed craftsdwarf has snatched all the bones from the alligator, but apparently he still wants more.  Since there aren't any more alligators on the map, what should I do?  He also wants shells - is there any way to make anyone eat some of the turtles I have (may not be an easy task, I have about 200 lavish meals lying around).  EDIT: Nevermind, put an unprepared turtle stockpile in my sheriff's dining room, and he ate it (wait a second... a noble did something useful?), and forbidding the crocodile bones made him get something more plentiful.

For the shells, the way would have been to use the stocks menu (z, stocks) to forbid all the food except turtles. (Or <d, b, f> and do it manually, but you always miss something!)

For the bones, if crocodile (or just "all of one type") is what he wants, that's what he wants.  If it's just "more brains bones!", then a quick hunting party (military and/or civilian), or bumping up the slaughtering of a domestic animal is the plan.

Actually, you want him to use the 'gator bones if possible. If the artifact is going to be of bone, then you want it to be of x4 value bones.  Milk it for all you can.

As for the wound... yeah, that's what I was afraid of.  Spine injuries may not fully heal - that may be permanent. Big future in archery if you can't get her to spar.

Well funnily enough, now that i've said it i have realised goblins are the only race that has a plausible religion ( Their deities actually exist ) they worship demons that lead their towers, they worship

and pretty much the only ones with a religion that doesn't revolve around them as a race. Interestingly, normally there is a "good and bad god" in every fantasy medievil game, but only evil in Dwarf Fortress, i wonder...

The dwarven economy is just a stand-in, from what I understand. As it is, it represents an actual economic system about as well as poison ivy represents a salad.

I normally go through the raws and remove the [NERVOUS] tag from all bady parts. Doesn't help with brain damage (and possibly head injuries), but it does sort everything else out. I wish dwarves would heal light grey nervous injuries at the very least, even if it takes as long as a yellow injury.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Worst I got was an alligator killing of 2 dwarfs at the start.

Fortress was doomed to fail after that sadly..

I peirced a chasm with some up down stairs, onto a ledge full of trogs.  Beautiful.  Killed my miner, too.
