I'm actually not sure if you can build walls with silty clay loam - if you don't mine out the outermost wall, it'll work as a regular one though. Dig down a few levels and you should hit stone; use that for building your walls.

cave-ins only happen if you dig out the roof of a room. Illustration is easier:

level z:
+++++++
+++++++
+++++++
+++++++

level z+1 (one above):
--------
-+++++-
++++++-
--------
(not to scale) + is floor, - is open space. In the example above, the floor would fall down as soon as you removed the last + (second to last row, left-most one). A single support can hold an entire mountain up (this is likely to get fixed some day, but nobody knows when).

so the stories of cave in dangers are horribly over exagerated?

I read the entry, but...

Ok, maybe nethack has made me paranoid.

OOOh, I've got exposed native copper +1z level up, I should do something about that... and microline?

Ok, my unit list keeps showing dead frogmen, but I can't find the corpses, and I'm really sure I'm not doing the killing, how do I find them?

There were cave ins in the 2d version, which is probably where these stories came from.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

How can I be sure I've got everything out of the wagon, how do I see a list of all items in existance?  If I take the wagon appart before it's empty, did I loose items?  How can i take this appart anyway?

Um, wow... how do I build a wall? (wiki said, Build, Construction, Wall... but under build there's not construction c is chair, for designating thrones)

b -> C -> w

The menus are all case-sensitive, and you need to use capital C.

For all your items, go to the status screen (hotkey 'z'), then select stocks. You might not have enough accuracy to see every item individually.

Ah... right.

Ok, I've built a table, but it moved to storage...

I've figured out how to DUMP an item (cat keeps putting vermin corpses in a food store, miasma is bad) but how do I move this table?

You have struck "Native aluminium" ... Cool.

....

What can I do to keep cats from leaving roaches to rot in my food stockpile?

Having some trouble with caravans, the last one didn't try to trade anything with me, even with a depot.

Ok, I'm having a terrible time setting/controlling/understanding dwarf jobs, I'm going to have to re-read ALL of that.

My first imigrents... lovely I'll be out of food in another season from this...  so far I've not even planted a field without interteruption yet.

I think soon I will know the joy of tantrum starvation.

Because worse then no food, there's never been any booze.

b-t let's you build a table (or, rather - let's you put a table somewhere).

Designate an outdoors refuse pile (outdoor stuff doesn't generate miasma)

I still recommend the tutorial ;)

I built a table, it moved to a storage pile as soon as it was done... that was how I discovered it was done.

How do i get it from storage, to a room so I can make that my dinning room?

And I did read tutorials, plural... I just haven't done a tutorial world...
I guess I didn't learn enough from reading them once, and will have to read them again.

when a table is constructed, it goes to the furniture stockpile.

If you have tables in a stockpile, you can build them. press b, then t (for table). That lets you place it somewhere to make a dining hall.

It's the same with beds, armor stands, chests, weapon racks and so on.

I get it...

You first make the item, then you build the item, then you make the room around the item...

egads... that took a while to sink in and make sense, thank you.

I'm making such a mess of this, tempting to toss this site completely, let them tantrum spiral down and try again elsewhere.

I do recommend you press tab until the list of menu options shows up. Even though it reduces the size of the map you can view, I found it was best to leave it up until I had memorized all the key's I needed.

Also, this tutorial is amazing: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=31928.0

You just got to make the rock salt wet, that's all.

Maybe with MAGMA!!  Or water.

it would have to be, as I don't see any rivers...
though the fisherdwarf did run off towards one it was ... far.

I'm going to ask for a new site and try again
If you ever have a river, ANYWHERE in you map. You can always get it closer too you :)
I personally always keep my rivers on the side of my map, since they produce lag, and a large river splitting your site in half will produce more lag then a small corner in the far edge of your map  :)

Welcome, hope you'll have fun! (which wont be hard if you let the game in and try out a little ^^)
