Everyone get in here!  I need a caucus vote on our next Congressman!  Your choices are:

Adam Smith: I can build Factories, third-tier buildings that turn 1 unit of input into 1.5 units of output.  Essentially, making more good stuff with less crap stuff, and doing it even faster.

Thomas Jefferson: Liberty Bell production increases by 50%, catapulting me down the path to Rebellion.

The other guys are all useless.  Who does New Various Nonsense most need?

What will having more Liberty Bells do? Oh well, loyalty's pretty useful, but I lean towards Adam Smith, the classical Elite Liberal. I'll switch my vote if somebody gives me a good reason why having excess Liberty Bells is a good idea.

When you declare independence, do you still get immigration due to those crosses? Or do those crosses become basically meaningless?

I haven't played the game for ages so I could be totally wrong, but I don't think you can go to your home port in europe anymore after independence (meaning, no way to pick up immigrants). You get offered mercenaries from other countries though.

Makes sense. The reason I asked was that in Civ4: Colonization, you could convert crosses either into Liberty Bells or into Tools, depending on your position towards religion ("Seperation of Church and State"/"Theocracy").

REASONS WHY LIBERTY BELLS IS GOOD

You get a production bonus for good govt. You get continental congress faster. You can rebel sooner. You get foreign intervention sooner.

Wait a second. Why would anyone want to intervene on our behalf considering the fact we beaten all the other colonial powers up?

I just wondered that if we choose to Adam Smith, we could produce better weaponary to fight the Spainish Monarch, but I'll switch my vote over to Jefferson, if it is better in the long term.

adam smith...
need a decent ecomony to fight off the gov't... plus factories make it possible to have 3 blacksmiths and 3 gunsmiths and still come out with both tools and muskets...
does nobody else go for the size-15 100-food-a-turn fortressed shipyarded newspapered powerhouse with 5 factories in, producing 400 tons of top quality goods a turn?

yeah. skip jefferson, build printing presses and newspapers if you need more bells. economy rocks.

You'll notice there's quite a few less tan squares in the lower part of the world.

I've got chores and crap, so I'm calling this one done for now.  I've razed half the Aztec Empire and made about 60000 pesos in the process, though most of it's not home yet.  Peace out.
