Petty Criminals have to wear stockades all the time though.
Petty Criminals should be sentenced to DEATH.

If Sid Meier really wanted to represent the slave trade, you can capture Indians, and turn them into "Prisoners of War" (since you usually gain slaves through raiding parties and waging war). These Prisoners act as free labor, sorta like Converts, but could rebel peridoically, causing unrest in the town. You can also buy Prisoners of War from your home country too.

It would likely lead to Aqizzar raiding Indian villages just to gain new POWs (which is sorta realistic, the demand for slaves was so high that people waged war just for slaves)...like Aqizzar even needs an excuse.

EDIT: Come to think of it, Civ4: Colonization allows you to outlaw slavery if you declare independence, right? Which implies that you do enslave?

EDIT 2: Here is Civ4: Colonization's Gamefaqs Guide to Conducting SLAVERY!!1!1!
Quote
--==All Men Are Free==--

 +2 Population per Settlement

This isn't as useful production wise, but given that you have use declared
independance from the motherland, you need one thing, troops. This population
boost will give more colonists that you can use to turn into soldiers and
defend your colonies. Give them guns, and they will become soldiers, but give
them guns and horses, and they become dragoons, albeit some rather
inexperienced ones, but dragoons none the less.

--==Slavery==--

 +25% Food, Lumber, Silver, Cotton, Fur, Sugar, Tobacco and Ore Production in
  all Settlements.

This isn't that useful if you can use those items to trade and make money with
it in the first place. Also, you need to remember that to declare
independence, it is generally a good idea to have a big bank balance to bribe
other nations or tribes on the map to fight for you. However, if you think
that you can bribe another nation with trade goods, go right ahead, I don't
plan to stop you.

--==Summary==--

I would like the All Men Are Free stance better. Not because I dislike Slavery
per se, a production bonus is useful, but now, this part of the game is where
you are going to be fighting troops, and more troops are always needed to
replace those who have fallen for their country. Therefore, the first Stance
is more useful than the second, in my opinion.

I'm going to add my voice to the call for MORE BELLS

There's a trick where if you don't like any of the ones that it offers you, you can reject them all for one turn by closing that window out somehow...

I wouldn't try it without saving though...

I'm going to say, nothing less then total conquest all the way from sea to sea, but only after you've aranged to have more bells per turn then you get now, double it if you can.

Don't bother with the other nations on other chunks of land an islands, but yha, own what you got, utterly.

I like to pack them all in as close as i can without overlap, and set up trading paths to cover deficates, that often includes getting food to places inland from the ocean where master fishers don't go.

*cough* i'm talking too much, your playing not me...

what what's that somebody else said about civ 4 having a colonization mode?

There is an official Civilization 4: Colonization that you can buy. It's a little misleading of them to put the Civilization 4: in front, as it is not a Civ 4 mod, but rather a new game based on the Civ 4 engine.

Well, as anyone who plays it knows, fishing is just better at producing food.  Optimally, a plowed plains tile with a river worked by a master farmer can make 9 food (I think), but you're almost never going to find that.  Conversely, a fishery with two or three shores requires nothing but a dock and can produce upwards of 8 food.  Not to mention you just seem to get Master Fisher more often than farmers.  I have seven right now, and four farmers.

Also, I'm working on the turn now.  I have more money than I know how to spend, and I just found the Fountain of Youth.  Holy crap.

Fountain of youth?  Nice.

If the revolution is still a while off, consider starting a bunch of small towns of the western continent.  They won't be as export oriented as the eastern ones but will produce a lot of bells to rack up your sons of liberty count and then produce a lot of food to give you a huge population to fight the war of independence later on.

When you declare independence, do you still get immigration due to those crosses? Or do those crosses become basically meaningless?

I haven't played the game for ages so I could be totally wrong, but I don't think you can go to your home port in europe anymore after independence (meaning, no way to pick up immigrants). You get offered mercenaries from other countries though.

Mainiac: That's the plan.  Corps: I dunno.  Boksi: Cool.

Everyone get in here!  I need a caucus vote on our next Congressman!  Your choices are:

Adam Smith: I can build Factories, third-tier buildings that turn 1 unit of input into 1.5 units of output.  Essentially, making more good stuff with less crap stuff, and doing it even faster.

Thomas Jefferson: Liberty Bell production increases by 50%, catapulting me down the path to Rebellion.

The other guys are all useless.  Who does New Various Nonsense most need?
