Gotcha! I remembered a tip from that guide!

How about you save the game just before you get to select your new Contentinal Congress leader. Reload the game until you get the guy you want.

Because I don't feel like cheating.  And I've noticed a weird problem where sometimes loading a save will cause the game to advance turn without being able to do anything.  But I think that just happens when loading the autosave.

Huh... So you encountered another Native American tribe?

Crush them! Trample them beneath your horses' hooves! Drink their leader's blood from his own skull! Burn their puny villages, slaughter their livestock, poison the wells and salt the earth, THEN sprinkle it with powdered pitchblende! Let the arid desert and a pilllar of yellow, grinning skulls be a reminder what our glorious empire is capable of. Muh... Mhhhh... Muhahahahahahahahahahahaaaah!

Oh, wait, they want to be friends. Never mind that.

By the way, thats two votes to Chincinnati, and only one to everything else.

The town shall be called...

Chincinnati...just say it once, you know you want it.

Hey Aqizzar, some tips from a fellow DOSBoxer:
2xScaling is a great thing to use for those early extra-low-res games. (or 4xScaling if you're on a ginormous native res monitor)
Increasing the cycles will give you a much better performance, though sometimes it might seem like you're cranking it WAY above what it was designed to run on, it seems just fine otherwise. (Ctrl+F11/F12 to change the cycles in-game)

I already adjust the cycles.  You'll notice it's set to 6500, which I find to be a happy medium between playability and skipping for most programs.  Colonization's cutscenes just chug for some reason, probably because they're actually a different program being loaded internally.

The smaller resolution doesn't bother me, and the screenshots are more manageable.

Alright, I'm up to 1567, here's a status report:  I'm fucked at the moment, but I have options.  After next turn's load of cigars and coats hits Europe, I'll have 2800 pesos and another Carpenter.  I've got three veteran soldiers, two with horses, a scout way out in English territory, and Chincinnati is being expanded.  No clue when la Salle will join the Congress.
- The crux of my problems is a lack of iron and an abundance of Apache.  They're everywhere.  They keep demanding food, but otherwise throw gifts at me and ignore my unarmed units, so I think they're scared.  But they're planted on all the mining territory.
- Consequently, I can't build any tools or guns, and I'm out of tools.  Tools are still cheap back in Seville, so I could buy some for the time being.
- Conversely, the prices of guns and horses have skyrocketed.  I need a domestic industry to outfit soldiers, but I can't start that industry until I kick the Apaches around some more.
- There is one possible avenue of iron, with a silver vein, but it's an inland spot right next to the Apache capitol (with my Expert Mission).  It's a long, slow gamble but could pay off huge.
- That planter I captured in Fort Orange is actually a Cotton Planter, and I have a Master Weaver.  There's a possible cotton rich spot, but it's in Apache land (like everything else) and will take time to develop.  Coincidentally, there's a Tobacco Planter for hire.
- Oceanography is limiting my economy right now, because everything is five tiles travel but I only have a Caravel (can only move four tiles).  Buying a Merchantman would boost at least the speed of my cashflow.
- The same could be said of a Privateer's ship, which could pay for itself over time, but doesn't have the volume.

Some of those options are mutually exclusive, some aren't.  What do I do now?

Speed! Speed rules the world! The fastest will survive and that's why you must buy the boat!

Also, kill the Apaches! Only the person that kills the most Apaches will survive!

In my experience with FreeCol (which evidently has some differences), selling trading goods to the indians is definitely the way to go in the early game once you can afford it.  I would recommend that you buy a second caravel, load it up with trading goods and then sell go sell those to the indians living in coastal encampments

This should net you a nice profit, with which you can buy tons of weapons to use on the unsuspecting fools.

I believe there is a founding father who makes your ships move 1 space faster, which would double the effectiveness of your caravels by the sound of it.  I recommend getting lots of explorer founding fathers so you can get him (and the other great founding fathers.)  Even that fur trapper guy you dissed on is pretty good, IMO.  A city in the woods w/ doubled fur gathering becomes a cash machine.

With apaches littering the land scape I suggest that you keep trying to go with the hugenormous missionarie's hat converting way.

As for tools is it possible that you can trade with the indians? I mean they have already taken boat loads of tools from you, haven't they?

Reviewing that spoiler, I noticed that you don't seem to be using your tools.  Make a pioneer why don't ya?  If you don't, the tools will just end up gifted to savages or thrown in the water.  Plus, pioneers don't count to city size and boost your production permanently, so they're a good way to boast citygrowth in the early game before you have lots of bells.  Besides, didn't you say you had a colonist just sitting around?

Also, "Bay12 Food Party".  Hi-larious!  I think you should have thrown the food in the water just because of the name.  Hopefully, you'll get another chance!

A %1 hike is so tiny though.  Although he might have chucked the food, then offered to pay for it.

You can't see it in the pictures, but I built some roads around Bay 12 and plowed the grass at Chincinnati, and built a fur coat shop at Bay 12 that's netted me a lot of money.  Damn Indians got 82 of my 200 tools (stole the Dutch's starting supply, not that the AI cares), so I only had 118.  I've only got 38 left.

I'll be doing the next round after work.  Gimme suggestions, and I'll need another town name.
