Hair/fur/wool
« on: September 01, 2007, 09:36:00 pm »

I didn't notice this in any of the dev lists (although it is likely I missed it, but there seems to be a lot of room for hair related things.

First, we should be able to scalp our enemies in adventure mode.

Hair should also be a grabbable thing (Toss a dwarf by his beard!), and effected like that. That and fingernails would make nice catfights  :) What do you guys think?

What about bald people? No one will choose to have hair if it can be used against them.
But its true that every dwarf has a beard.
I tried modding it, but there is no appropriate tags.

Would helmets be able to protect hair? Probably, unless you knocked it off. Though most soldiers wouldn't have long hair in the first place, I guess less intelligent creatures would still have plenty.

I like it!

There is a mention in a bloat about wrestling that eventually you'll be able to pull hair and beards, which means they're going in at some point.

Making a wall of bones... Now that'd be interesting.

Rewalling with bones is possibly the most amazing idea ever.

Yes bone-walled prison would be a perfect place for drowning my captives in their comrades' blood.

Sounds like the kind of thing that would lead that WWF-esque wrestler to cut off his own ears with a pair of scissors.  Awesome!

I think a while ago on SomethingAwful someone modded in Dwarf Beards as a body part. It's removal was a mortal wound.

There were some cultures where warriors had long hair.  If I recall correctly, Japan and American Indian.  But history is not my strong point and I might have watched too many Steven Segal movies.

Here in Scandinavia long hair was common in the Iron Age, and beards too. The problem with grabbing the hair or beard is that you have to drop your shield, and if you dropped it at that time, you were dead meat.

Oh yea, there's even a story told in "The Long Ships" about how long hair might actually be an advantage to a viking in certain life-or-death situations.   :)

That gives me an idea for dwarven justice: Holmgang! Instead of cowardly having your craftsmen beaten, the "offended" nobles have to face them in combat!

Would make an interesting alternative to hammerings. But is a bloodfeud in your fortress really something you would want? Would look awesome, though.

Great idea. You could burn down an elf town and capture all the elves in a cage.

Shave them all and make the hair into a carpet!  :D

Its a really big cliche that dwarves greatly value beards. Cutting off the beard is like cutting off your arm and so on. Some dwarves from the warhammer fantasy universe ARMOUR thier beards in segmented sheath things.

Armored beards...why didn't I think of that? That is just brilliant.

Rollory suggested (in the DF RPG) that a shaven face was the "Mark of Shame" in dwarven culture, which makes a lot of sense to me...perhaps that could be an alternative to hammerings. A punishment for "misdemeanors," having your beard cut short. Maybe losers in the arena would have that done also.

And of course, it would allow decoration of beards, especially at parties or important functions (diplomatic meetings, trade meetings, the crown beard decorations), and armored beards to protect the throat!
