Of course, why else would dwarves risk life and limb to retrive one sock during a full scale siege onslaught.
The depressing thing is that they quite often lose life and limb(s) in the process.

I can't believe how much iron there is on this hill. Ran into another Magnetite deposit while digging out the bedrooms for my dwarves.

Ok, we have managed to survive a year with only one death. The suicidal Woodworker died to a horde of Troglodytes. A bit later the Troglodytes split up for some reason and I could take them out with recruit rushing them one at a time and get back my axe. Now I've managed to set up a rudimentary farming operation and the cooks are cooking the wine into roasts. There's 40ish plants, 90ish seeds, 10ish drinks and around 100 prepared meals. I don't have the exact numbers. 10ish drinks should be fine since the brewer is brewing and I have plenty of plants. Seeds stores are good too. The female War dog went and died to troglodytes too which is bad. 3 Other animals, both my horses are female which is bad since I haven't seen any horse packs roaming yet.

3 Miners
1 Stoneworker
1 Metalsmith
1 Engineer.

That's pretty much it. I couldn't trade with the caravan, because I was too late building the Trade depot and busy dealing with the troglodytes. I have high hopes, but this is an unknown build and I really made a lot of mistakes due to the skill spread among the dwarves.

Alright sweet we're pretty much in the same boat, cept I have my clerk working as much as possible because since he is the mechanic I have no need for him as of yet...

Now if you would wait for the other expeditionists that would be awesome... now to my lab report!

very quick update, I just want to say that I got the game running, and I managed to dig into the fortress without any losses so far.  I will be moving down the center of the mountain, with the temporary entrance at the starting z level of the wagon  ;D.  More updates later, this is looking good.

The only loss expected is the woodworker since he is the one that just runs off to kill the toglodytes without war dogs or an axe and gets maimed so if you turn off hunting your ok

I saved him by turning off hunting and stationing him at the top of the hill.
Things are going extremely slow, but I figured out what I need to do, and am getting forges set up to make an axe for wood chopping.  Then when that's done I'll try to set up the farms which will take awhile.  They wont get rooms until the farm is up, and the closest water supply is a good number of z levels down and to the top right.

Hehe, no it's one of three ponds.  I'm doing it the old, not glamorous way, digging a shaft to one z level below the pond's surface and a tunnel all the way out to it.  Once there I'll mine out a decent sized room with a small hallway leading to the pond.  I'll set up a floodgate and on the opposite side, a lever.  The main food stockpile will have to be on the same z level, directly below my main fortress to slightly increase efficiency.

Ugh, I'm gonna have to retire on this one.  First two tries were a bust (I like trying to kill trogs) and have just been too busy to get into it.

Good luck guys!
