Im afraid to use it because it might disappear or whatever and I would lose all of that value.

Make a lever out of it, those don't usually disappear (usually others don't disappear either, with the exception of the pillar-side mechanisms used in cave-ins, and perhaps the ones in one-use pressure plates, though I've never used those, so I'm not sure).

Idokrimad, "Pointedtactic", a rainbow trout bone buckler.

I was think, "Sweet, artifact buckler FTW!"  Then I noticed:
"On the item is an image of a human and an alligator in rainbow trout bone.  The alligator is striking down the human."  There are alligators on my map.

1) Capture them
2) make war alligators
3) Get humans to siege you
4) Profit!

I once had a fortress where every single strange mood would go to a peasant and he'd always pick woodcrafting.  So out of 16 dwarves I had four for five legendary woodcrafters...  The Elves must have been jealous.  Or maybe they were all ELVEN SPIES!

Lots of crappy artifacts like birch rings with bands of birch.

Now you know why it's generally advised to train every dwarf in a moodable skill (one that's less useless than woodcrafting, at least). And by train I don't mean having them level up, just having them make one item using the desired skill is enough, as long as they've never done any work in an undesired moodable skill. Thus if you've got a dwarf who's a novice stonecrafter and novice mason, then you should probably train him up to <no label> in masonry if you want to make sure you avoid a shitty stonecrafting mood.

Consult the wiki on which skills are moodable.

I got an artifact raw adamantine mechanism encrusted with gems and some metal.

It was worth 1,000,000+ dworf bucks.

Im afraid to use it because it might disappear or whatever and I would lose all of that value.

*whistle

Ditto to the advice above to build a lever out of it.  I don't think you'll have to worry about the mechanism disappearing, and it sounds like a good excuse to start a megaproject just so you can set it off with the Million Dollar Lever.  ;D

Let me guess, the dwarf was a ranger, hunter or a trapper?
this is why people like training useless dwarves so as you get weapons or armour instead of rings and traps

Nope, blacksmith, and I've gotten a tremendous amount of use out of him at least.  Turned out my artifact wasn't as lame as I thought it was.

Granite is black.

A quick glance at the Wikipedia article, without actually reading anything, suggests that granite can be all sorta colors.

Stones can be pretty much any color depending on what contaminants are in them, yes.  There's such a thing as black marble (it looks pretty nifty), white granite, and even rainbow obsidian.

"The Gully of Fences", a Granite Toy Axe.  Or, as I would have called it, an axe.

No; by far the worst are all the wooden jewelry pieces created through possession valued at only a few thousand dorf-bucks, the curse of my latest fort.

I haven't been playing this game enough - I read "human" and though "dwarf".

Okay, I'll be using that buckler now ;).
