My first ever artifact in DF was a magnetite puzzle box. Second one was a sunfire amulet. I got lucky with the second one, the ONLY gem I'd found at that point was one that was buried next to a magma vent.

The chest is useful to keep my mayor happy. But still-- it's only worth 2400db. It's a useful artifact, but oh so lame.

See, I thought of it more as an artifact barstool - it didn't start the fight, but once someone gets clubbed over the head with THIS, the fight is over. Seems more likely that's how the dwarves meant it anyways.

I forget the details since the save is at home, but I got a bauxite floodgate, with bauxite spikes, 2 other decorations made out of bauxite, and then, a leather patch. I'm guessing the whole thing will go up in smoke if it gets dipped in lava, due to the leather.

So far, I've only gotten things like wood rings and a common stone hatch cover.

Idea for making sure my moody dwarves pick good materials: Putting some single tile stockpiles near their workshops and only using the manager to assign work to those shops.
