Just got my first artifact, from my first fortress to make it that far. A door, of towercap, decorated with towercap. Total value: 3600.

At least I got a legendary carpenter out of it.

That is the best you can ask for in my oppinion. And something to quiet the baron/ess-King/Queen so they dont kill your legendary weaponsmith for not making any cristal glass windows.

I think he's complaining that off of a moody weaponsmith he got a piece of furniture and legendary mining, instead of an artifact weapon and a legendary weaponsmith...I'd be a tad peeved too.  By the time I'm getting artifacts on a regular basis, I almost never need more miners.

For a fey dwarf to become a legendary miner, their highest skill must be mining (to be fair, the dwarf described could have had equal levels [as in, the same description] of weaponsmithing and mining, but a slightly higher amount of experience in the latter). Then, a moody miner will not claim a forge, they will claim a mason's workshop.

The conclusion is that either this CrazyTim guy was misremembering things, or he was talking out of his ass.

The way I understood it to work (vaguely recalling something Toady said in one of the Fortress talks, but I could have it wrong) was that the highest moddable skill had the greatest chance of but that it was not absolute. So if you have 1000 xp in Weaponsmith, 980 xp in Armorsmith and 20 xp in Mining you have a 50% chance of it being Weaponsmith, 49% chance of it being Armorsmith and a 1% chance of it being Mining. Also I recall something being said about certain skills being a higher chance of getting the mood (xp is doubled or tripled for the purposes of figuring out % chance of getting the mood).

Way I remember it, that clearly contradicts common knowledge, what is written on the wiki, and last but not least, my experience.

That doesn't of course mean that it's wrong; after all, the dev himself said so (though your phrasing of "vaguely recalling" this makes me all the more skeptical).

Man, that is so crazy it passes the threshold from lame into awesome again.
You should make all metal things in your fortress using said anvil and only said anvil.

Can I? Far as I know, it's not fire-safe, which an anvil must be to use it.

I dunno about lamest, but I have a Bituminous Coal toy boat. With 4 or 5 decorations, all in Bituminous Coal. Is there a "Most Flammable Artifact" thread anywhere?
