Question regarding painkillers
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:59:00 pm »

I've been out of the loop - and I'm not sure where to put this topic, so please forgive me if it should have gone in gameplay questions.

Are there any plans for medicinal herbs/drugs/extracts? Preferably things like painkillers etc? Dwarf opium!

While I don't have any control over what he adds to his game, it's one of the things, information-wise, that I've been sending to Toady.

I've also got a volunteer actively working on herbal medicine, and the refining of such.

Yeah, this has been suggested already. Just one word: alchemy. Hopefully Toady will implement an alchemy system eventually. It's a must have on my wishlist.  8)

He needs Rat Weed cigarettes to get through the working day.
In other words, yeah, it would be fun if doctors used various smokes to for example remove miasma, prevent infections and ease pains in large areas. Priests could probably do that too.

It used to be believed that perfume, incense, and other sweet smells (such as cut flowers) could help prevent the spread of disease--that it was the bad smell that caused sickness--and unfortunately, that was proven to be wrong.

It *is* however, a time-appropriate superstition, I think, since I've heard of it happening since ancient Egypt, through the Renaissance.

So placeboes to make dwarves happier but have no real health effect - that might be a part of it too. Same as miasma.

The miasma theory of disease was actually pretty close to germ theory-- it just conflated the symptom with the source too much.  Other miasma treatments, such as -cleaning-, actually helped, and for the right reasons.

During the Black Plague people would have lilac and such tied to necklaces, and I could definitely see dwarves using more dwarvenly smells.

"Now Urist, just sniff this !! sock!! after each meal and drink."
