Stupid Thieves..grr
« on: April 23, 2009, 07:55:54 pm »

It is the first winter of my new fort and one of my dwarves has made an artifact wooden toy hammer some time in the fall. I have some stockpiles outside but with no defenses whatsoever. Then I get...

A thief has stolen Sibrekkurol! (artifact)

Hope my dorf doesn't get too upset.

You're screwed. Kobold raiding parties should show up.  I laugh. I laugh.

If a group of kobolds spells out your doom, you might just want to quit playing. Kobolds are basically cats with clothing.

If he learns how to utilize the weapon of armok (magma) then there won't be a problem, no matter how weak his conventional military.

Fix'd, the death of any proper fortress.

I have no magma but there is HFS and a bunch of other gooies on the map. I will have to wait until the caravan arrives to get me some weapons because the map is wood poor and I have yet to find coal. All I have are a few crossbows and bone bolts. Bring it I say!

I use a cheap way of removing the threat of archers. I make those cat boxes designed to lure in invaders, but the walls are fortifications and the maze has a lot of channels around it. They'll fire from a distance and fail the accuracy check, making them effectively wrestlers when they get to my fort.

I find the best way to stop thieves is to tie ward dogs at your entrance and/or trade depot. They easily rip apart the wimpy Kobold thieves, but a siege tends to kill them really fast so then you need to go through the trouble of training more war dogs. This gives me an idea. I think I'll try defending a fortress against Orcs with nothing but dogs, all assigned to one handler.

I belive the answer to the problem is not to store artifacts in unprotected stockpiles outside. actualy, dont even do it if you have a guard posted. dig a 1x1 hole in a wall somewhere deep inside your fortress and put it there. at least untill you build a proper reliquary.

I actually have a man named like that named "dog man" And his profession is "dog master" I have yet to get a siege, I'm interesting how 50 dogs will do though.

Because of all the dog clutter, he lives out in a shack near a swamp. I don't think he's very happy.

I have a soft spot for bolds... and mod them occasionally to make them cooler...this has however led to a few nasty accidents.. (the Bold who got into my booze stockpile... and used dragonfire breath... that was ...fun)

You gotta remember, bows and arrows are the equalizer for pretty much everything in dwarf fortress ( With the exception of the Giant Cave Spider...Unless you see it coming) and kobolds are small and agile and carry around bow and arrows, if the fortress is ill prepared, you WILL get gang raped from all sides, all it takes is them to distract and kill dwarves while they steal more stuff to get more kobolds to get more stuff and etcetera, i don't think you should go as far as to "stop playing", i lost a +Steel Platemail+ to them, and that was just last week.

You chose... poorly.

Move those stockpiles inside (or wall/moat them in), and restrain pair of animals at the 3-wide entrance (as below).  Problem should be solved.

As mentioned above, using this setup, on animal is guaranteed to bump into a thief or snatcher regardless of which tiles they try to enter through.  No need for wardogs if you don't want - cats or fluffy wamblers would do the job just as well as far as alerts.

actually, fluffy wamblers are vermin, right?  Vermin don't detect ambushers.
